The WCS have won awards\, performed all over the world\, and have played in concerts with well-known musical artists.  \nWindham Chamber Singers in concert at Franco Center April 30\n \nLEWISTON– The Windham Chamber Singers will perform at the Franco Center at 7 p.m. Tuesday\, April 30. The WCS group gained international attention in 1996 by winning the Prize of Vienna at the 25th International Youth and Music Festival in Vienna\, Austria. Since then\, they have captured the hearts of audiences everywhere.  \nTheir accomplishments have been recognized on NBC Nightly News and National Public Radio. The Chamber Singers have appeared on CBS This Morning\, the Today Show\, and in their own prime time holiday special broadcast on WGME TV. The choir has performed at major venues including Carnegie Hall\, St. Patrick’s Cathedral\, Notre Dame Basilica (Montreal) and the White House.    \nThe Chamber Singers have appeared in concert with artists including John Rutter\, Josh Groban\, Kenny Rogers\, Andy Williams\, The Celtic Tenors\, Dougie MacLean\, and Sean Slaughter and Master Stroke Queen Tribute. Their American Family Holiday concerts have become a holiday tradition in the Lakes Region and have featured renowned guests such as Jodi Benson\, Noel Paul Stookey (Peter\, Paul and Mary)\, Sutton Foster\, Norm Lewis\, Lindsay Mendez\, and Mandy Gonzalez.  \nThe group has made four guest appearances at the Magic of Christmas concerts with the Portland Symphony Orchestra. The choir has released five CDs on the Pine Point label and has appeared on numerous other recordings\, either as background singers or as contributors on compilation recordings.     \nIn 2018\, they celebrated the 30th anniversary of the choir with a two-day reunion that welcomed back hundreds of alumni. The years when The Beatles crafted their sound\, and their stage performance\, and the years when they took the world by storm\, and changed everything.”  \nAt age 11\, Steve Murray found an old guitar in the basement and has been playing ever since. A fan of many music genres\, he became a Beatles fan after watching The Beatles Anthology documentary series in November 1995.    \nHis grandfather bought him and his identical twin brother (who plays George Harrison in Studio Two) their first guitars: a Rickenbacker and Hofner bass and got them private guitar lessons. By the age of 12\, the brothers were winning talent shows and band competitions for playing Beatles tunes.     \nThroughout high school\, Steve played drums in an award-winning percussion ensemble and marching band\, but never strayed far from his true passion of Beatles rock. An accomplished musician\, Steve attended Berklee College of Music and played jazz and alternative rock music before co-creating Studio Two – The Beatles Tribute with his band mates.    \nIn addition to playing John Lennon\, Steve is a live sound engineer and currently serves as the band’s booking agent.    \n“As a trained musician\, I never expected to be playing in a Beatles tribute band\, but it has been an amazing experience. I am humbled to have an opportunity to portray John Lennon\, who is one of the most talented musicians and composers of all time\, and I am thrilled to bring Beatles music to a multitude of different generations. Best of all\, I get to do this with my brother and best friends\,” said Steve.    \nRob Murray picked up his first guitar at age 11 and has never been without one since.  Like his twin brother Steve\, Rob was turned on to The Beatles by watching The Beatles Anthology documentary series in 1995. He is a Beatles trivia master and is particularly knowledgeable about the equipment The Beatles used – especially vintage microphones.    \nAs a young musician\, Rob played drums in an award-winning percussion ensemble and marching band\, and continued to play guitar\, often winning talent shows and band competitions for playing Beatles tunes.    \nA graduate of Berklee College of Music\, Rob is a trained guitarist with strong audio engineering skills. For example\, he has been involved in helping Beatles documentary filmmakers to sync Beatles audio to rare concert footage.    \nWhen he co-founded Studio Two in 2012\, all of Rob’s talents were put to use. In addition to playing George Harrison\, Rob is the equipment guru\, hunting flea markets\, estate sales\, and eBay to assemble the authentic gear the Beatles used in the early 1960s.    \n“Playing George Harrison and re-enacting Beatles’ performances from the early years has been a thrill. I love the vintage equipment and raw sound of the Beatles’ Hamburg era\, and we take special care to ensure the look and sound is as close to authentic as possible\,” said Rob. “Studio Two has been an amazing journey\, and every day I look forward to meeting both old fans of The Beatles and new fans of Studio Two!”    \nDylan Verge is a Boston native entering his senior year at Berklee College of Music. He was awarded the J. Curtis Warner City Music Full Scholarship to the institution where he is pursuing his studies in the CWP major (Contemporary Writing and Production). Verge has been Influenced by Beatles music since he witnessed footage of the four lads rocking the nation on the Ed Sullivan Show in February 1964 when he was four years old.    \nJoshua Jones is flying in from Seattle\, Washington to perform with Studio Two. Jones will portray Paul McCartney. He is a self-taught left-handed bass player. Submitted photo.  \nMagic Bus: The Who tribute band coming to Franco Center March 9  \nLEWISTON–Magic Bus\, The Who tribute band based in Portland\, Maine\, will bring their performance to the Franco Center stage at 7 p.m. Saturday\, March 9. The Who\, one of rock’s most iconic bands\, made the charts in 1964 with their hit song\, “Can’t Explain.” That was the beginning of their amazing journey. Still performing more than 50 years later\, The Who can be heard in commercials\, television theme songs and on the radio.  \nMagic Bus\, the tribute band\, captures the sound and feel of The Who. “We’ll take you on a tour of the rock band’s discography\, covering songs from “My Generation” to “Who Are You.” We also perform select songs from the rock operas “Tommy” and “Quadrophenia\,” said Paul Bessa\, the Roger Daltrey role-player of the tribute band.  \nPaul Bessa (vocals\, piano\, guitar\, harmonica) comes from New York and now lives in Portland\, Maine. His introduction to music began with drums at the age of 15 after which he taught himself piano and guitar. He’s played in several rock bands and grew up listening to Led Zeppelin\, the Beatles and other iconic bands. In 1997\, he got a recording contract in Hollywood for his own music. Today\, he gives vocal lessons and performs the music of The Who. His vocal style sounds like Daltrey’s and with Bessa’s talent on acoustic guitar\, keyboards and harmonica\, each song is rich with sound.  \nAndy Pappas plays the part of Pete Townshen on guitar and vocals. His love for classic rock began at an early age. Listening to Elton John as a young boy sent him on a musical journey\, later becoming fully immersed in the classic rock genre. His main influences include Deep Purple\, Yes\, Van Halen\, and Rush. Pappas eats\, sleeps\, and breathes everything rock music. His passion for guitar started at the age of 12\, and he was performing in a band by 13. A self-taught musician\, Pappas continued to perform in bands to the present day. After his parents gave him his first drum it has been chaos from day one. Playing in bands and traveling to six states and two countries\, Meservey honed his musical skills. Hearing Who tunes all his musical life\, he now takes on the high-profile part of drummer Keith Moon. Meservey has studied Moon’s drumming and has said\, “It’s an ongoing process. Keith is like a big band drummer in a rock band. You can’t appreciate his genius until you learn his unpredictable style.”   \nRich Pierpont on guitar and vocals\, steps up to the part of Who bassist John Entwistle. Musical talent runs in Pierpont’s family. His many times great-grandfather wrote “Jingle Bells\,” and his father was in a competitive barbershop quartet. After not getting blessed with any of those particular musical genes\, luckily there was a bass clef gene still kicking around\, he said. Band members say Pierpont has “an ear for music and 10 nimble fingers. The music will begin at 6\, with a reception to follow at 7:15.\nWe are happy to announce our first collaborative program between Bates and USM as leaders in arts scholarship. The program\, “Celebrating French Music\, the History Makers\, the History Changers\,” highlights the lives and music and struggle for freedom of French women who have been forgotten in history. In honor of those who passed away after the tragedy in Lewiston this October\, the program will conclude with Fauré’s Requiem. In collaboration\, friends\, colleagues\, and students from Bates College and University of Southern Maine will come together to sing the Requiem as a musical memorial.\nDr. Malinda Haslett\, soprano\, credits research partners at the Bates archives and the Franco-American Collection for assistance with her work on underrepresented composers\, in particular\, French Jewish resistance composer Claude Arrieu\, the subject of her USM Trustee Professorship. Arrieu lived in Paris during the Occupation\, where she was a founding member of the Front National des Musiciens\, a resistance network whose purpose was to save artists and art from annihilation while simultaneously preserving French culture and lifting morale. The FNM programmed public concerts of ‘degenerate’ composers\, illegally funneled music to artists in hiding\, and published an underground newspaper instructing anti-Vichy behavior. When the war ended\, their efforts went unrecognized\, and their music fell into obscurity. After the war\, Dame Alice Esty\, a Maine native\, soprano\, and philanthropist\, commissioned Arrieu to write for her. Esty lived in Lewiston\, and for this reason Arrieu’s manuscripts written for Esty lie in the archival collection at Bates College. This evening we honor Arrieu\, Esty\, and Maine’s contribution to the classical vocal music canon\, as well as to showcase the work of current young vocal artists here in Maine.\nOriginally from Evian\, France\, Joëlle Morris is a singer\, choral conductor\, music educator and voice teacher living in central Maine. Recognized for her warm mezzo voice and her ability to sparkle on stage\, she is admired for her versatility. Joëlle has performed in an array of opera and musical theater shows\, her favorite roles include Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier\, Dorabella in Cosi fan tutte\, Cherubino in La Nozze di Figaro\, Rosina in The Barber of Seville\, Aunt Eller in Oklahoma! and Aldonza in Man of la Mancha. An active recitalist\, Joëlle has sung across the United States\, France and Switzerland. Since relocating to Maine\, Joëlle has appeared with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra\, the Mozart Mentor Orchestra and is regularly a featured artist at Colby College\, Bates College\, Bowdoin College\, the Franco Center\, Waterville Opera House\, Nordica Auditorium\, the Colby Jazz Faculty Ensemble\, King’s Chapel in Boston and the Early Music Festival in Portland. She is also a co-founding member of the Amethyst Chamber Ensemble and the Resinosa Ensemble which specialized in 21st century and commissioned works. She now serves as the Director of Choir\, and teaches Applied Voice lessons\, Intro to Music and Musicianship Labs at Bates College.\nThe USM Voice Program shines in its championing of underrepresented composers\, and tonight we celebrate these trailblazing women through song. Osher School of Music seniors Josephine Lawrence\, Bella StCyr\, and Caroline Wood present music of women pioneers: Astrud Gilberto\, Thea Musgrave\, and Francisca ”Chiquinha” Gonzaga. As UROP (Undergraduate Research Award Opportunity) award winners\, each soprano has focused her research on a more complete view of music history\, highlighting the work of undervalued women in music. Tonight you hear the musical fruits of their labor and how each student has found meaning in correcting the gender pendulum in music.\nConductor duties will be shared by Scott Wheatley (USM) and Joelle Morris (Bates). Scott Wheatley\, baritone\, is a native of Kansas. He has performed with the Kansas City Lyric Opera\, New York City Opera\, Whitewater Opera\, Bronx Opera\, Sarasota Opera\, Opera Northeast\, Connecticut Grand Opera\, Opera Maine\, the Ashlawn Summer Festival companies\, the New York Philharmonic\, Vienna Philharmonic\, Los Angeles Philharmonic\, Cleveland Orchestra and San Francisco Symphony. Scott is on the voice faculty at University of Southern Maine\, where he also serves as a collaborative pianist. Born in Quebec and raised in Maine\, Vachon has been sharing her Franco-American upbringing for over 40 years\, through traditional and contemporary folksongs from Quebec and Acadia\, as well as her own compositions.     \n“Lewiston is a special place for me\, just because of the strong support I received from fans at the very beginning of my career\,” said Vachon. “I love coming back and having a chance to reconnect with many fans and friends!”  \nThough she often entertained at her family gatherings\, she began singing publicly with the support of the Franco-American Center at the University of Maine\, where she discovered others who shared the same rich heritage. Submitted photo.  \nElton and Billy Joel tribute performance coming to Franco Center Jan. 26  \nLEWISTON–Piano Men: The Music of Elton and Billy tribute band will perform at 7 p.m. Friday\, Jan. 26\, at the Franco Center. The concert is a tribute to the amazing songs of Billy Joel and Elton John. Rarely have these songs been heard performed live in this way as Elton and Billy have only on a few occasions performed with orchestras\, according to the band.   \nMembers of the band include Joe Boucher (piano\, lead vocals)\, Christopher Eastburn (bass guitar\, vocals)\, Gary Backstrom (guitar\, vocals)\, Steve Hodgkin (drums)\, Matt Kennedy (saxophone)\, and Nick Pires (audio engineer). At times the band is joined by musicians playing violins\, viola\, and cello; and a female vocalist.  \nJoseph Boucher grew up in the quaint seaside village of Biddeford\, Maine.  He is a singer and songwriter who has fronted the power pop band Frotus Caper.  They recorded and released four critically acclaimed albums. He has worked as a studio session musician\, playing piano and arranging pop\, rock and folk songs for many artists.  \nBoucher is an on-air host and producer at Maine Public Classical Radio.  For 16 seasons he was the concert manager for The Portland Symphony Orchestra.  Prior to that\, he spent seven years touring internationally as stage manager. His music has been performed to acclaim from New York’s Carnegie Hall to the Getty Center in Los Angeles. Hodgkin returned to the drums in 2004 to perform and record with Joe Boucher in Frotus Caper and has been working with Boucher ever since.  \nNick Pires was an active member of both the jazz and concert bands in high school while also gigging frequently in the local music scene. After graduating\, Pires put his musical aspirations aside to attend Full Sail University in pursuit of a career as a live sound engineer. Despite not playing for several years\, he continued to maintain an interest in music and networking with musicians through his work in concert production and eventually found his way back to the drums.  \nMatt Kennedy spent the last 30-plus years as a professional saxophonist starting in his hometown of Denver\, Colorado and later as a fixture in the blues and roots scenes of Portland\, Oregon\, Vermont\, New Hampshire\, Baltimore\, MD\, and Washington DC before settling in Portland\, Maine. Nel Meservier\, spokesperson and keyboard player for the group\, said\, “The Just Us Entertainers will perform traditional and nontraditional Christmas songs. We like to have fun and we like the audience to have fun.”  \nJust Us\, organized in 1999\, was the first musical group to perform at the Franco Center in the summer of 2000. The Franco Center had taken over ownership of the former St. Mary’s Church building in June 2000. The Just Us group has performed hundreds of concerts in the Lewiston-Auburn\, Portland and August areas. Several of their concerts were fundraisers for various veterans organizations.  \nThe group has included 20 members at times\, from musical families representing three generations. The decision to delay the concert by one week came about due to the tragic shootings that have deeply affected the community. \nFiddle-icious is a community-based orchestra whose members are determined to preserve the cultural heritage of Maine’s traditional fiddle music\, dances\, and songs passed down from Scottish\, Irish\, Quebecois\, and Acadian ancestors.   \nThe members of Fiddle-icious are part of a larger fellowship that strives to bring joy and purpose to all who participate—all while keeping the musical tradition alive and thriving. The orchestra is directed by master fiddler Don Roy and accompanied by Cindy Roy on piano.  \nSpecial guests for this concert include Matt and Erica Brown Shipman\, and the sibling act of Rossby\, Elsie\, and Oliver Arnott.  \nThe audience will hear fiddles\, guitars\, flutes\, banjos\, tin whistles\, accordions\, cellos\, violas\, mandolins\, harps\, stand-up bass and other instruments. The orchestra’s music is scored for beginner to advanced players\, creating a full\, rich sound.  \nRoy and his wife\, Cindy grew up in French-Canadian families where music was an integral part of their lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Lewiston community and especially those families who have been impacted by the senseless violence on Wednesday night. \nAs you can imagine\, the board of the Midcoast Symphony Orchestra have had some difficult conversations\, and have had to make some difficult decisions. \nThe MSO board met yesterday evening and discussed how best to proceed with Leonard Bernstein’s vision of making more music in the face of violence\, and yet making sure that our top priority is the safety of our musician family and our audiences. Given all that has happened over the past few days\, we have determined that it would be in everyone’s best interest to cancel our concert at the Franco Center on Saturday night. \nTicket holders for that concert (including subscribers) have several options for how to proceed and will receive an email with more information shortly. \nAt this time\, the Board has not yet made a decision about Sunday’s show at Orion. DESCRIPTION:LEWISTON– The Franco Center has announced that Runnin’ Down a Dream: The Tom Petty Tribute Band will return to its stage at 7 p.m. Saturday\, Oct. 7\, 2023. For over 40 years\, Tom Petty created timeless classics with the Heartbreakers\, Mudcrutch\, The Traveling Wilburys\, and released solo albums until his unfortunate death in 2017. “Our show faithfully replicates the style and feel of a Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers concert\, allowing the audience to experience the music of this extraordinary artist\,” said Roger Howard\, tribute band spokesperson.  \nThis Maine-based band includes members Mike Boucher on lead vocals and guitar; Harry Coddington on lead guitar; Roger Howard on drums; Marty Mclellan on guitar and vocals; and Steve Brown on keyboard and vocals. When five veteran musicians from Maine\, with local and national experience\, play Petty’s music together\, the feeling\, meaning\, and very soul of these songs are undeniable.   \nRoger said\, “Our first performance last year at the  Franco center in Lewiston was magical. Playing  to the enthusiastic audience at the beautifully restored former church made it a really special night for us. We’ll be back for our encore performance on October 7th with some new songs and a whole assortment of Tom Petty’s classics!” Roger started taking drum lessons at age 12 and joined his first garage band at 16. From there he went on to play in an assortment of bands in five states. His wide variety of musical styles include blues\, country\, alternative\, rock\, and rhythm and blues. Playing in Runnin’ Down A Dream is the culmination of everything Roger has learned and experienced over many decades in his extensive musical career.       \nMike Boucher started playing Tom Petty songs in his high school cover band. During the 1990s\, Boucher began to focus his talents on song writing and has continued to sing and play his music for audiences on the East and West coasts.   \nIn 2007\, Boucher called on Harry Coddington to lend his versatile guitar-playing talents to the alt-country band The Gaffers. Coddington started playing guitar shortly after seeing The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964 when he was six years old. He’s played in many different bands in Florida and now in Maine. He has an affinity for Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers\, which made dreaming up this band just feel natural.   \nMarty Mclellan made his debut at a coffee house performing covers of Neil Young\, Grateful Dead\, Jim Croce and James Taylor at Hobart College in Geneva\, New York in 1982. Dirty McCurdy marked Mclellan’s first real experience as a frontman. The band covered mostly rock and roll\, but also some original material while it continued to adhere to the blues standards it had established in the Blues Barn years.   \nSteve Brown’s music career began in the late 1970s when he joined the band White Water in Central Maine playing a beat-up old Wurlitzer electric piano. This led to a brief Holiday Inn tour with an Elvis Presley tribute show. Brown became an in-demand keyboard player in the New England region. He was a member of some well-known bands including Ricky and the Giants\, Elmore Twist Band\, Gary Black and the Blues\, 43 North and the LA Harley Band.   \nThese five musicians together on the Franco Center stage will perform the music of Tom Petty with authentic renditions from every stage of Petty’s career. Submitted photo.  \nDavidson County Line to perform at Franco Center Sept. 30  \nLEWISTON–With much excitement from staff\, the Franco Center has announced that Davidson County Line will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday\, Sept. 30. Davidson County Line is a three-piece band established in 2015 from Central Maine. They perform a mix of rockabilly\, blues\, rock\, and country music. All members have over 30 years of experience and the mix of music is a “crowd pleaser\,” according to Jake Hodgkin\, Franco Center production manager.  \nThe various musical hits they play are by Johnny Cash\, Elvis\, Jerry Lee Lewis\, Chuck Berry\, and many more from the 1950s and ‘60s. Davidson County Line performs on diverse stages including cruise lines\, casinos\, antique car shows\, and county fairs in Maine\, Massachusetts\, and New York.   \nMembers of Davidson County Line include Nashville recording artist on guitar and vocals “Eddie” Jones who began playing violin\, mandolin\, and banjo at age six in Nashville. He started performing at the Grand Ole Opry and Ryman Auditorium from an early age. Jones was one of Nashville’s youngest mandolin players. He soon began playing both guitar and bass\, and has been performing professionally for more than 40 years with a number of well-known artists.  He worked as a studio session player in Nashville and is considered a “Guitar Slinger.” Jones relocated to Maine in 2010. His natural southern drawl enhances his ability to sing the songs of his second cousin\, Johnny Cash.  \nMarty Lang on guitar joined the lineup in 2019. His musical career began in 1971 playing guitar for The Country Squires\, performing weddings\, and at various venues in Maine. Lang had the honor of performing with Dick Curless at a benefit. In 1979\, Lang performed with the Country Troubadours\, and the band won the title as the number one country band in Maine. After time spent in the United States Navy\, he joined several bands\, while attaining his associate degree in music at the University of Maine in Augusta. From there\, Lang furthered his studies at the University of Maine at Gorham\, studying classical music. Lang has a studio in his home where he produces music.  \n“Bub” Lynch on drums joined Jones and Lang in the spring of 2023 and is a welcomed asset to the lineup. Lynch began playing drums in 1970 while attending college at State University of New York\, SUNY Potsdam. He relocated to Maine in 1976 and performed with several different groups. Lynch had the amazing opportunity to perform in the warm-up band for the legendary Buddy Guy. Lynch has also performed and won in the Road to Memphis Challenge in 2000 with Blue Steel Express\, 2011 with Zac Pomerleau Blues Band\, and again in 2018 performing with Matt and the Barnburners. Lynch continues to perform in several bands in the Northeast.  \nTickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door day of show and can be purchased through the Franco Center’s box office in person from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays or call 207-689-2000.
