SUMMARY:Magic Bus: The Who tribute band coming to Franco Center March 9
DESCRIPTION:PHOTO CAPTION: Portland-based The Who tribute band\, Magic Bus\, is coming to the Franco Center at 7 p.m. Saturday\, March 9. Tickets are available at 207-689-2000 and www.francocenter.org/shows. The Franco Center is at 46 Cedar St.\, Lewiston. Submitted photo.  \nMagic Bus: The Who tribute band coming to Franco Center March 9  \nLEWISTON–Magic Bus\, The Who tribute band based in Portland\, Maine\, will bring their performance to the Franco Center stage at 7 p.m. Saturday\, March 9. The Who\, one of rock’s most iconic bands\, made the charts in 1964 with their hit song\, “Can’t Explain.” That was the beginning of their amazing journey. Still performing more than 50 years later\, The Who can be heard in commercials\, television theme songs and on the radio.  \nMagic Bus\, the tribute band\, captures the sound and feel of The Who. “We’ll take you on a tour of the rock band’s discography\, covering songs from “My Generation” to “Who Are You.” We also perform select songs from the rock operas “Tommy” and “Quadrophenia\,” said Paul Bessa\, the Roger Daltrey role-player of the tribute band.  \nPaul Bessa (vocals\, piano\, guitar\, harmonica) comes from New York and now lives in Portland\, Maine. His introduction to music began with drums at the age of 15 after which he taught himself piano and guitar. He’s played in several rock bands and grew up listening to Led Zeppelin\, the Beatles and other iconic bands. In 1997\, he got a recording contract in Hollywood for his own music. Today\, he gives vocal lessons and performs the music of The Who. His vocal style sounds like Daltrey’s and with Bessa’s talent on acoustic guitar\, keyboards and harmonica\, each song is rich with sound.  \nAndy Pappas plays the part of Pete Townshen on guitar and vocals. His love for classic rock began at an early age. Listening to Elton John as a young boy sent him on a musical journey\, later becoming fully immersed in the classic rock genre. His main influences include Deep Purple\, Yes\, Van Halen\, and Rush. Pappas eats\, sleeps\, and breathes everything rock music. His passion for guitar started at the age of 12\, and he was performing in a band by 13. A self-taught musician\, Pappas continued to perform in bands to the present day. His passion for The Who and his musical talent fit the role of Pete Townshend. His life’s mission is to keep classic rock alive and well.  \nMike Merservey was born with drumsticks in his hands. After his parents gave him his first drum it has been chaos from day one. Playing in bands and traveling to six states and two countries\, Meservey honed his musical skills. Hearing Who tunes all his musical life\, he now takes on the high-profile part of drummer Keith Moon. Meservey has studied Moon’s drumming and has said\, “It’s an ongoing process. Keith is like a big band drummer in a rock band. You can’t appreciate his genius until you learn his unpredictable style.”   \nRich Pierpont on guitar and vocals\, steps up to the part of Who bassist John Entwistle. Musical talent runs in Pierpont’s family. His many times great-grandfather wrote “Jingle Bells\,” and his father was in a competitive barbershop quartet. After not getting blessed with any of those particular musical genes\, luckily there was a bass clef gene still kicking around\, he said. Band members say Pierpont has “an ear for music and 10 nimble fingers. With blisters under callus\, and grooves in his fingertips\, it’s back to the future\, flirting around the octaves emulating the great ‘Thunder Fingers.’”  \nListen to the band’s music videos here: https://magicbustour.com/audio-videos/ \nDoors and cash bar open at 6 p.m. Concert starts at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at BOX OFFICE TICKETS or by phone at 207-689-2000. Tickets can also be purchased in person at our box office between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.    \nTier 1 tickets in advance are $30 and at the door: $35.  \nTier 2 tickets in advance are $25 and at the door: $30.  \nThe Franco Center is at 46 Cedar St.\, Lewiston. Parking is available in the mill lot. The building is handicap accessible on the Lincoln St. Alley side.  \nSeason Underwriter is Maple Way Dental Care; Media Sponsors are Sun Journal\, Turner Publishing\, Uncle Andy’s\, Bennett Radio Group. Show sponsors are Dirigo Federal Credit Union; Lawn Guard; Norway Savings Bank; and Platz Associates. \n###  \n

SUMMARY:Art exhibit\, reception\, tour at Franco Center March 9
DESCRIPTION:Paper Arts exhibit\, reception\, tour at Franco Center March 9  \nLEWISTON—The Franco Center will host an hour-long art exhibit\, reception and tour from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday\, March 9\, to celebrate the art works of 10 students completing its 9-week Onion Foundation-funded paper arts workshop led by local artist Karen Brooks. The public is welcome to attend this free event.  \n \n“This arts education program at the Franco Center featured multi-session\, hands-on\, skill-based art lessons culminating in an exhibit and celebration\,” said Denise Scammon\, marketing and development director at the Franco Center. “I’ve worked with Karen Brooks in a similar program a few years ago and she is a phenomenal teacher.”  \n \nThe Franco Center recognizes the role it plays in providing free arts education opportunities such as this program that is designed to meet the expressed needs and interests of older adults. “The students created art; they didn’t only learn about it. SUMMARY:USM professor to present free ‘Women Who Risked Everything’ concert at Franco Center March 1
DESCRIPTION:PHOTO CAPTION: “The Women Who Risked Everything for Freedom” concert program featuring soprano Malinda Haslett\, Scott Wheatley on piano\, and a slideshow of women composers is a collaboration between Franco-American Collection at University of Southern Maine and the Franco Center and starts at 6 p.m. Friday\, March 1. Admission is free but RSVP your seat at 207-689-2000 or www.francocenter.org/shows. Submitted photo.  \nCLICK HERE TO RESERVE YOUR SEAT \nThe Franco-American Collection at the University of Southern Maine\, in collaboration with the Franco Center\, the University of Southern Maine’s Osher School of Music\, Bates College Department of Music and with research support from Bates special collections will host “Celebrating French Music\, the History Makers\, the History Changers” at the 46 Cedar Street\, Lewiston venue at 6 p.m. Friday\, March 1. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. There is no admission fee but seats must be reserved. The music will begin at 6\, with a reception to follow at 7:15.\nWe are happy to announce our first collaborative program between Bates and USM as leaders in arts scholarship. The program\, “Celebrating French Music\, the History Makers\, the History Changers\,” highlights the lives and music and struggle for freedom of French women who have been forgotten in history. In honor of those who passed away after the tragedy in Lewiston this October\, the program will conclude with Fauré’s Requiem. In collaboration\, friends\, colleagues\, and students from Bates College and University of Southern Maine will come together to sing the Requiem as a musical memorial.\nDr. Malinda Haslett\, soprano\, credits research partners at the Bates archives and the Franco-American Collection for assistance with her work on underrepresented composers\, in particular\, French Jewish resistance composer Claude Arrieu\, the subject of her USM Trustee Professorship. Arrieu lived in Paris during the Occupation\, where she was a founding member of the Front National des Musiciens\, a resistance network whose purpose was to save artists and art from annihilation while simultaneously preserving French culture and lifting morale. The FNM programmed public concerts of ‘degenerate’ composers\, illegally funneled music to artists in hiding\, and published an underground newspaper instructing anti-Vichy behavior. When the war ended\, their efforts went unrecognized\, and their music fell into obscurity. After the war\, Dame Alice Esty\, a Maine native\, soprano\, and philanthropist\, commissioned Arrieu to write for her. Esty lived in Lewiston\, and for this reason Arrieu’s manuscripts written for Esty lie in the archival collection at Bates College. This evening we honor Arrieu\, Esty\, and Maine’s contribution to the classical vocal music canon\, as well as to showcase the work of current young vocal artists here in Maine.\nOriginally from Evian\, France\, Joëlle Morris is a singer\, choral conductor\, music educator and voice teacher living in central Maine. Recognized for her warm mezzo voice and her ability to sparkle on stage\, she is admired for her versatility. Joëlle has performed in an array of opera and musical theater shows\, her favorite roles include Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier\, Dorabella in Cosi fan tutte\, Cherubino in La Nozze di Figaro\, Rosina in The Barber of Seville\, Aunt Eller in Oklahoma! and Aldonza in Man of la Mancha. An active recitalist\, Joëlle has sung across the United States\, France and Switzerland. Since relocating to Maine\, Joëlle has appeared with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra\, the Mozart Mentor Orchestra and is regularly a featured artist at Colby College\, Bates College\, Bowdoin College\, the Franco Center\, Waterville Opera House\, Nordica Auditorium\, the Colby Jazz Faculty Ensemble\, King’s Chapel in Boston and the Early Music Festival in Portland. She is also a co-founding member of the Amethyst Chamber Ensemble and the Resinosa Ensemble which specialized in 21st century and commissioned works. She now serves as the Director of Choir\, and teaches Applied Voice lessons\, Intro to Music and Musicianship Labs at Bates College.\nThe USM Voice Program shines in its championing of underrepresented composers\, and tonight we celebrate these trailblazing women through song. Osher School of Music seniors Josephine Lawrence\, Bella StCyr\, and Caroline Wood present music of women pioneers: Astrud Gilberto\, Thea Musgrave\, and Francisca ”Chiquinha” Gonzaga. As UROP (Undergraduate Research Award Opportunity) award winners\, each soprano has focused her research on a more complete view of music history\, highlighting the work of undervalued women in music. Tonight you hear the musical fruits of their labor and how each student has found meaning in correcting the gender pendulum in music.\nConductor duties will be shared by Scott Wheatley (USM) and Joelle Morris (Bates). Scott Wheatley\, baritone\, is a native of Kansas. He has performed with the Kansas City Lyric Opera\, New York City Opera\, Whitewater Opera\, Bronx Opera\, Sarasota Opera\, Opera Northeast\, Connecticut Grand Opera\, Opera Maine\, the Ashlawn Summer Festival companies\, the New York Philharmonic\, Vienna Philharmonic\, Los Angeles Philharmonic\, Cleveland Orchestra and San Francisco Symphony. Scott is on the voice faculty at University of Southern Maine\, where he also serves as a collaborative pianist. With soprano Dr. Malinda Haslett\, he has presented recitals throughout Europe promoting the vocal literature of under-represented women composers\, especially American composers. He is also the Assistant Director for the Oratorio Chorale\, a large\, award-winning community chorus in Southern Maine.\nSupport for this concert program comes from Maine Community Bank\, Maine Advisory Associates\, a Friend\, TempleShalomAuburn.org\, UMaine Judaic Studies\, DentalLace.com\, and UMaine Women’s\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies. Season underwriter is Maple Way Dental Care. Media sponsors are Sun Journal\, Turner Publishing\, Uncle Andy’s\, Bennett Radio Group. Thank you also to sponsors the Quebec Delegation in Boston and TV5MONDE.\nThe Franco Center is at 46 Cedar St.\, Lewiston. Parking is available in the mill lot. The building is handicap accessible on the Lincoln St. Alley side.\n  \n

She shares her Franco American joie de vivre–her “joy of living as a Franco-American” through her music. Born in Quebec and raised in Maine\, Vachon has been sharing her Franco-American upbringing for over 40 years\, through traditional and contemporary folksongs from Quebec and Acadia\, as well as her own compositions.     \n“Lewiston is a special place for me\, just because of the strong support I received from fans at the very beginning of my career\,” said Vachon. “I love coming back and having a chance to reconnect with many fans and friends!”  \nThough she often entertained at her family gatherings\, she began singing publicly with the support of the Franco-American Center at the University of Maine\, where she discovered others who shared the same rich heritage. She quickly gained recognition as a Franco-American voice through her first performances at state festivals in Lewiston and Madawaska\, Maine and at schools and parish soirées.     \nShe has a dozen solo recordings to her credit and continues to perform and record the music that best represents her love of Franco-American culture.     \nTickets can be purchased through the Franco Center’s box office in person from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays or call 207-689-2000. Maine-based comedians Ian Stuart and James Theberge began filming the Welcome to Maine series in late 2020. As part of the comedy show\, Ian portrays Mark and James portrays Troy\, fictional Mainers. They were joined by Cousin Luke\, portrayed by comedian Paul Hunt in late 2021. Aiming to be both funny and informative\, Welcome to Maine blends a mix of updated traditional Maine humor with historical facts and a whole bunch of “yuhts.”   \nThis comedy show is inspired by traditional Maine humorists such as Bert and I\, and Tim Sample but are far from the now-classic comedians.  Welcome to Maine is brutally honest and unassuming. They are not shy to share some of the bold truths that are common elements of daily Maine living.      \nThe troupe’s material features well-known Maine themes and topics which include Allen’s Coffee Brandy\, weed stores\, and Marden’s. Mark is the straight man of the team with a standard reply\, Yuht\, Oh yuht\, or Ooooh yuht\, as Troy and Cousin Luke set up all the material. The trio produced a comedy album which includes skits reminiscent of an Adam Sandler album.  \nVisit the Welcome to Maine Facebook page for videos of this comedy act at https://www.facebook.com/WelcomeToMaineShow or on their website at https://www.welcometomaineshow.com/  \nTickets are $25 in advance\, $30 at the door the day of the show. Cash bar and doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at www.francocenter.org/shows or by phone at 207-689-2000. Tickets can also be purchased in person at our box office between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.      \nThe Franco Center is at 46 Cedar St.\, Lewiston.
