SUMMARY:Welcome to Maine comedy show coming to Franco Center Feb. 3
DESCRIPTION:PHOTO CAPTION: Comedians Ian Stuart and James Theberge will bring their Welcome to Maine comedy show featuring Maine themes and topics to the Franco Center at 7 p.m. Saturday\, Feb. 3. Tickets can be purchased at 207-689-2000 and www.francocenter.org/shows. The Franco Center is at 46 Cedar Street\, Lewiston. Submitted photo.  \nWelcome to Maine comedy show at Franco Center Feb. 3  \nLEWISTON—The Welcome to Maine comedy show will be coming to the Franco Center at 7 p.m. Saturday\, Feb. 3. Maine-based comedians Ian Stuart and James Theberge began filming the Welcome to Maine series in late 2020. As part of the comedy show\, Ian portrays Mark and James portrays Troy\, fictional Mainers. They were joined by Cousin Luke\, portrayed by comedian Paul Hunt in late 2021. Aiming to be both funny and informative\, Welcome to Maine blends a mix of updated traditional Maine humor with historical facts and a whole bunch of “yuhts.”   \nThis comedy show is inspired by traditional Maine humorists such as Bert and I\, and Tim Sample but are far from the now-classic comedians.  Welcome to Maine is brutally honest and unassuming. They are not shy to share some of the bold truths that are common elements of daily Maine living.      \nThe troupe’s material features well-known Maine themes and topics which include Allen’s Coffee Brandy\, weed stores\, and Marden’s. Mark is the straight man of the team with a standard reply\, Yuht\, Oh yuht\, or Ooooh yuht\, as Troy and Cousin Luke set up all the material. The trio produced a comedy album which includes skits reminiscent of an Adam Sandler album.  \nVisit the Welcome to Maine Facebook page for videos of this comedy act at https://www.facebook.com/WelcomeToMaineShow or on their website at https://www.welcometomaineshow.com/  \nTickets are $25 in advance\, $30 at the door the day of the show. Cash bar and doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at www.francocenter.org/shows or by phone at 207-689-2000. Tickets can also be purchased in person at our box office between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.      \nThe Franco Center is at 46 Cedar St.\, Lewiston. Parking is available in the mill lot. The building is handicap accessible on the Lincoln St. Alley side.  \nBUY ONLINE TICKETS HERE \nSeason Underwriter is Maple Way Dental Care; Media Sponsors are Sun Journal\, Turner Publishing\, Uncle Andy’s\, Bennett Radio Group. SUMMARY:Elton\, Billy Joel tribute performance at Franco Center Jan. 26
DESCRIPTION:PHOTO CAPTION: Joe Boucher\, pianist and vocalist for Piano Men: The Music of Elton and Billy\, will be performing at the Franco Center with the tribute band at 7 p.m. Friday\, Jan. 26. Tickets available at 207-689-2000 or www.francocenter.org/shows. The Franco Center is at 46 Cedar Street\, Lewiston. Submitted photo.  \nElton and Billy Joel tribute performance coming to Franco Center Jan. 26  \nLEWISTON–Piano Men: The Music of Elton and Billy tribute band will perform at 7 p.m. Friday\, Jan. 26\, at the Franco Center. The concert is a tribute to the amazing songs of Billy Joel and Elton John. Rarely have these songs been heard performed live in this way as Elton and Billy have only on a few occasions performed with orchestras\, according to the band.   \nMembers of the band include Joe Boucher (piano\, lead vocals)\, Christopher Eastburn (bass guitar\, vocals)\, Gary Backstrom (guitar\, vocals)\, Steve Hodgkin (drums)\, Matt Kennedy (saxophone)\, and Nick Pires (audio engineer). At times the band is joined by musicians playing violins\, viola\, and cello; and a female vocalist.  \nJoseph Boucher grew up in the quaint seaside village of Biddeford\, Maine.  He is a singer and songwriter who has fronted the power pop band Frotus Caper.  They recorded and released four critically acclaimed albums. He has worked as a studio session musician\, playing piano and arranging pop\, rock and folk songs for many artists.  \nBoucher is an on-air host and producer at Maine Public Classical Radio.  For 16 seasons he was the concert manager for The Portland Symphony Orchestra.  Prior to that\, he spent seven years touring internationally as stage manager. For more information visit www.pianomenmusic.com  \nChris Eastburn is an arranger\, orchestrator and award-winning composer. His music has been performed to acclaim from New York’s Carnegie Hall to the Getty Center in Los Angeles. Commissions include a ballet score for Island Moving Co. called “Newport Stories\,” a string orchestra and chorus score for the theatre production “Moses Brown and the Voyage of the Slave Ship Sally” and a score for Caitlin Corbett Dance Co. called “Tom’s Wealth.”  \nEastburn’s string quartet/vocal quartet score “Consent to Gravity” choreographed by Daniel McCusker was hailed as “one of the most successful new musical works for dance I’ve heard in ages” by Debra Cash\, dance critic for NPR’s Here and Now. His arrangement and orchestration of “Jazzy Old St. Nick\, a hip swing version of a Christmas favorite” is now available from the Hal Leonard choral music catalog. Learn more about his music at www.eastburnmusic.com  \nGary Backstrom has been playing for the last 20 years touring the country with his award-winning jam band Jiggle the Handle and as the Gary Backstrom Band. He has opened for such acts as Little Feat\, Spin Doctors\, Rat Dog\, The Samples\, South Side Johnny\, The Allman Brothers\, Warren Haynes\, and Blues Traveler. He has shared the stage with Dereck Trucks\, AOD\, and members of Todd Rundgren’s Band. Check out more details at www.garybackstrom.com  \nSteve Hodgkin had an active schedule as a working drummer in a variety of rock bands before making a switch to singer/songwriter in 2000 when he fronted Portland-based original rock band The Reedlings. Hodgkin returned to the drums in 2004 to perform and record with Joe Boucher in Frotus Caper and has been working with Boucher ever since.  \nNick Pires was an active member of both the jazz and concert bands in high school while also gigging frequently in the local music scene. After graduating\, Pires put his musical aspirations aside to attend Full Sail University in pursuit of a career as a live sound engineer. Despite not playing for several years\, he continued to maintain an interest in music and networking with musicians through his work in concert production and eventually found his way back to the drums.  \nMatt Kennedy spent the last 30-plus years as a professional saxophonist starting in his hometown of Denver\, Colorado and later as a fixture in the blues and roots scenes of Portland\, Oregon\, Vermont\, New Hampshire\, Baltimore\, MD\, and Washington DC before settling in Portland\, Maine. Over the years\, he has backed a wide range of artists\, including Terry Adams (NRBQ)\, Daniel Johnston\, John Popper (Blues Traveler)\, Luther “Guitar Junior” Johnson\, and Peter Tork (The Monkees). He is currently an active freelance saxophonist in Portland\, Maine and is a member of the soul/funk band Mamas Boomshack (www.mamasboomshack.com).  \nPiano Men music videos can be viewed at https://www.theirsongs.com/piano-men  \nDoors and cash bar open at 6 p.m. Concert starts at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at www.francocenter.org/shows or by phone at 207-689-2000. Doors and cash bar open at 10:30 a.m. for socializing. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m. followed by featured musical artists Don and Cindy Roy.  \nDiverse cultures\, performing arts\, and languages come together during La Rencontre (the gathering). Traditionally\, in Franco culture\, big celebratory meals included live music provided by members of the family and their neighbors. Many families made sure their kids each learned to play an instrument in order to entertain at such gatherings — and so\, accordingly\, the Franco Center invites local musicians to provide live music for its guests.  \nThe menu includes tourtiere (meat pie)\, vegetables\, roll\, and dessert.   \nDon and Cindy Roy are known for their Franco American traditional music and have performed across the country together for over 40 years\, Don on fiddle and Cindy on piano with step dancing.  Don was introduced to the fiddle at the age of 15 by his uncle Lou Mathieu\, a noted fiddler within Franco American circles\, and soon he was winning fiddle contests throughout Maine and beyond. In 2018\, Don and Cindy were honored to receive a National Heritage Fellowship Award from the National Endowment for the Arts.  \nTickets are $17 and include the meal and entertainment. All seats are reserved. Tickets must be purchased by noon Monday\, Dec. 4\, so we can plan the number of meals to prepare. Tickets will not be sold at the door.  \nCall the box office at 207-689-2000 or visit between 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Purchase online at www.francocenter.org/shows.  \nLa Rencontre series is sponsored by FACE Foundation\, TV5 Monde\, and the Quebec Delegation Boston.   \nThe Franco Center is at 46 Cedar St.\, Lewiston. The decision to delay the concert by one week came about due to the tragic shootings that have deeply affected the community. \nFiddle-icious is a community-based orchestra whose members are determined to preserve the cultural heritage of Maine’s traditional fiddle music\, dances\, and songs passed down from Scottish\, Irish\, Quebecois\, and Acadian ancestors.   \nThe members of Fiddle-icious are part of a larger fellowship that strives to bring joy and purpose to all who participate—all while keeping the musical tradition alive and thriving. The orchestra is directed by master fiddler Don Roy and accompanied by Cindy Roy on piano.  \nSpecial guests for this concert include Matt and Erica Brown Shipman\, and the sibling act of Rossby\, Elsie\, and Oliver Arnott.  \nThe audience will hear fiddles\, guitars\, flutes\, banjos\, tin whistles\, accordions\, cellos\, violas\, mandolins\, harps\, stand-up bass and other instruments. The orchestra’s music is scored for beginner to advanced players\, creating a full\, rich sound.  \nRoy and his wife\, Cindy grew up in French-Canadian families where music was an integral part of their lives. Fiddle-icious grew out of their desire to share their knowledge with others\, foster community through music and keep their musical heritage alive.  \nIn a social media post\, Fiddle-icious stated that the 2023 season is: “Our first concert series since 2019 and we can’t wait to see all your smiling faces!”  \nTo learn more about the group\, view the 2009 documentary short\, “Fiddle-icious – Community of Music\,” produced by the Salt Institute\, by logging on to www.fiddleicious.com.  \nTickets can be purchased through the Franco Center’s box office in person from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays or call 207-689-2000. SUMMARY:Mary Morton Cowan to present book talk at Franco Center Nov. 1
DESCRIPTION:LEWISTON—Award-winning author Mary Morton Cowan will speak about her family history that inspired her new book\, “Trouble in Nathan’s Woods\,” set during World War I at a New Hampshire lumber camp. The free presentation is part of the Books & Stories program and will take place at noon Wednesday\, Nov. 1\, at the Franco Center.  \n \nCowan is a member of the Morton family that owned the Paris Manufacturing Company in South Paris. PMC is known for manufacturing wooden chairs\, skis and sleds. The family operated a lumber camp in Crystal\, N.H.\, near the Canadian border\, which supplied wood for PMC. Morton’s presentation will include photos of the camp from the early and mid-20th century\, including one of the lumbermen’s bunkhouse.  \nCowan’s father spent his early childhood living in the camp. Cowan’s fictionalized story is based on her father’s and aunt’s memories. World War I raged in Europe while enemy spies lurked in New Hampshire\, causing trouble in the woods.  \nCowan will speak about why she wrote the book\, and she will share vintage photos of the actual logging operation\, taken by her grandfather\, Clarence G. Morton.  \nAlthough the story takes place in a New Hampshire logging camp\, similar events could be experienced at any New England camp. \nThis event is free and open to the public.  \nIt is suggested that participants buy the featured book or any of the author’s books ahead of the presentation and bring them to be signed by the author.  \nThe Franco Center is at 46 Cedar St.\, Lewiston. Parking is available in the mill lot. The building is handicap accessible on the Lincoln St. Alley side.  \nThe Books & Stories program at the Franco Center has been funded in part by the Maine Humanities Council and Maine Arts Commission.  \n  \n  \nPHOTO CAPTIONS:  \n#1: Mary Morton Cowan\, 2018. Submitted photo   \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n#2: The lumbermen’s bunkhouse at the logging camp in New Hampshire.
