The decision to delay the concert by one week came about due to the tragic shootings that have deeply affected the community. \nFiddle-icious is a community-based orchestra whose members are determined to preserve the cultural heritage of Maine’s traditional fiddle music\, dances\, and songs passed down from Scottish\, Irish\, Quebecois\, and Acadian ancestors.   \nThe members of Fiddle-icious are part of a larger fellowship that strives to bring joy and purpose to all who participate—all while keeping the musical tradition alive and thriving. The orchestra is directed by master fiddler Don Roy and accompanied by Cindy Roy on piano.  \nSpecial guests for this concert include Matt and Erica Brown Shipman\, and the sibling act of Rossby\, Elsie\, and Oliver Arnott.  \nThe audience will hear fiddles\, guitars\, flutes\, banjos\, tin whistles\, accordions\, cellos\, violas\, mandolins\, harps\, stand-up bass and other instruments. The orchestra’s music is scored for beginner to advanced players\, creating a full\, rich sound.  \nRoy and his wife\, Cindy grew up in French-Canadian families where music was an integral part of their lives. Fiddle-icious grew out of their desire to share their knowledge with others\, foster community through music and keep their musical heritage alive.  \nIn a social media post\, Fiddle-icious stated that the 2023 season is: “Our first concert series since 2019 and we can’t wait to see all your smiling faces!”  \nTo learn more about the group\, view the 2009 documentary short\, “Fiddle-icious – Community of Music\,” produced by the Salt Institute\, by logging on to www.fiddleicious.com.  \nTickets can be purchased through the Franco Center’s box office in person from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays or call 207-689-2000. SUMMARY:Mary Morton Cowan to present book talk at Franco Center Nov. 1
DESCRIPTION:LEWISTON—Award-winning author Mary Morton Cowan will speak about her family history that inspired her new book\, “Trouble in Nathan’s Woods\,” set during World War I at a New Hampshire lumber camp. The free presentation is part of the Books & Stories program and will take place at noon Wednesday\, Nov. 1\, at the Franco Center.  \n \nCowan is a member of the Morton family that owned the Paris Manufacturing Company in South Paris. PMC is known for manufacturing wooden chairs\, skis and sleds. The family operated a lumber camp in Crystal\, N.H.\, near the Canadian border\, which supplied wood for PMC. Morton’s presentation will include photos of the camp from the early and mid-20th century\, including one of the lumbermen’s bunkhouse.  \nCowan’s father spent his early childhood living in the camp. Cowan’s fictionalized story is based on her father’s and aunt’s memories. World War I raged in Europe while enemy spies lurked in New Hampshire\, causing trouble in the woods.  \nCowan will speak about why she wrote the book\, and she will share vintage photos of the actual logging operation\, taken by her grandfather\, Clarence G. Morton.  \nAlthough the story takes place in a New Hampshire logging camp\, similar events could be experienced at any New England camp. \nThis event is free and open to the public.  \nIt is suggested that participants buy the featured book or any of the author’s books ahead of the presentation and bring them to be signed by the author.  \nThe Franco Center is at 46 Cedar St.\, Lewiston. Parking is available in the mill lot. The building is handicap accessible on the Lincoln St. Alley side.  \nThe Books & Stories program at the Franco Center has been funded in part by the Maine Humanities Council and Maine Arts Commission.  \n  \n  \nPHOTO CAPTIONS:  \n#1: Mary Morton Cowan\, 2018. Submitted photo   \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n#2: The lumbermen’s bunkhouse at the logging camp in New Hampshire. SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Midcoast Symphony Orchestra's 'Soulful Expressions' concert Oct. 28
DESCRIPTION:Due to the tragedy affecting the community\, the Midcoast Symphony Orchestra will not be performing Saturday\, Oct. 28 at the Franco Center. Thank you for your understanding. Stay safe.\nAn important letter from the MSO President:\nDear MSO supporters – \nThis has truly been a week like no other we have ever experienced in Maine. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Lewiston community and especially those families who have been impacted by the senseless violence on Wednesday night. \nAs you can imagine\, the board of the Midcoast Symphony Orchestra have had some difficult conversations\, and have had to make some difficult decisions. \nThe MSO board met yesterday evening and discussed how best to proceed with Leonard Bernstein’s vision of making more music in the face of violence\, and yet making sure that our top priority is the safety of our musician family and our audiences. Given all that has happened over the past few days\, we have determined that it would be in everyone’s best interest to cancel our concert at the Franco Center on Saturday night. \nTicket holders for that concert (including subscribers) have several options for how to proceed and will receive an email with more information shortly. \nAt this time\, the Board has not yet made a decision about Sunday’s show at Orion. As you know\, the suspect is still at large\, so we have to wait and hope for some closure on this horrific episode before much longer. We expect to make a decision about the disposition of the Sunday matinee performance by 5pm on Saturday. \nShould you have any questions about our plans\, please feel free to call the MSO office at (207) 315-1712 or email info@midcoastsymphony.org. \nIn the meantime\, stay safe. Hug your loved ones even tighter than I know you already do. We will be making music again soon\, hopefully as soon as Sunday. \nMusically yours\, \nTim Kenlan\, MSO Board President \nSoulful Expressions\nRohan Smith\, Conductor \nProgram: \nWilliam Grant Still: Aspiration: Lento\, con risoluzione (from Symphony No.1) \nLudwig van Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 3 \n— featuring Anastasia Antonacos\, pianist \nDimitri Shostakovich:  Symphony No. 5 \nConcerts – Midcoast Symphony Orchestra: \nPerformances: \nSaturday\, October 28\, 2023 – 7:00 p.m. – Franco Center in Lewiston \nConcert length approximately 2 hours including intermission. \n

SUMMARY:Runnin’ Down a Dream Tom Petty tribute band returning Oct. 7 to Franco Center
DESCRIPTION:LEWISTON– The Franco Center has announced that Runnin’ Down a Dream: The Tom Petty Tribute Band will return to its stage at 7 p.m. Saturday\, Oct. 7\, 2023. For over 40 years\, Tom Petty created timeless classics with the Heartbreakers\, Mudcrutch\, The Traveling Wilburys\, and released solo albums until his unfortunate death in 2017. “Our show faithfully replicates the style and feel of a Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers concert\, allowing the audience to experience the music of this extraordinary artist\,” said Roger Howard\, tribute band spokesperson.  \nThis Maine-based band includes members Mike Boucher on lead vocals and guitar; Harry Coddington on lead guitar; Roger Howard on drums; Marty Mclellan on guitar and vocals; and Steve Brown on keyboard and vocals. When five veteran musicians from Maine\, with local and national experience\, play Petty’s music together\, the feeling\, meaning\, and very soul of these songs are undeniable.   \nRoger said\, “Our first performance last year at the  Franco center in Lewiston was magical. Playing  to the enthusiastic audience at the beautifully restored former church made it a really special night for us. We’ll be back for our encore performance on October 7th with some new songs and a whole assortment of Tom Petty’s classics!” Roger started taking drum lessons at age 12 and joined his first garage band at 16. From there he went on to play in an assortment of bands in five states. His wide variety of musical styles include blues\, country\, alternative\, rock\, and rhythm and blues. Playing in Runnin’ Down A Dream is the culmination of everything Roger has learned and experienced over many decades in his extensive musical career.       \nMike Boucher started playing Tom Petty songs in his high school cover band. During the 1990s\, Boucher began to focus his talents on song writing and has continued to sing and play his music for audiences on the East and West coasts.   \nIn 2007\, Boucher called on Harry Coddington to lend his versatile guitar-playing talents to the alt-country band The Gaffers. Coddington started playing guitar shortly after seeing The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964 when he was six years old. He’s played in many different bands in Florida and now in Maine. He has an affinity for Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers\, which made dreaming up this band just feel natural.   \nMarty Mclellan made his debut at a coffee house performing covers of Neil Young\, Grateful Dead\, Jim Croce and James Taylor at Hobart College in Geneva\, New York in 1982. Dirty McCurdy marked Mclellan’s first real experience as a frontman. The band covered mostly rock and roll\, but also some original material while it continued to adhere to the blues standards it had established in the Blues Barn years.   \nSteve Brown’s music career began in the late 1970s when he joined the band White Water in Central Maine playing a beat-up old Wurlitzer electric piano. This led to a brief Holiday Inn tour with an Elvis Presley tribute show. Brown became an in-demand keyboard player in the New England region. He was a member of some well-known bands including Ricky and the Giants\, Elmore Twist Band\, Gary Black and the Blues\, 43 North and the LA Harley Band.   \nThese five musicians together on the Franco Center stage will perform the music of Tom Petty with authentic renditions from every stage of Petty’s career. Doors and a cash bar open an hour before showtime.   \nDoors and cash bar open at 6 p.m. Concert starts at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at www.francocenter.org/shows or by phone at 207-689-2000. Tickets can also be purchased in person at our box office between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.    \nTier 1 tickets in advance are $30 and at the door: $35.  \nTier 2 tickets in advance are $25 and at the door: $30.  \nWatch Runnin’ Down a Dream Tom Petty  Tribute Band’s music videos on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/@RunninDownADreamTPettyTribute/videos  \nThe Franco Center is at 46 Cedar St.\, Lewiston. SUMMARY:Author Paul Dionne to speak about his books' topic: Religious subordination Oct. 4
DESCRIPTION:PHOTO CAPTION: At noon Wednesday\, Oct. 4\, local author Paul Dionne will discuss his books “The Priestess and the Pope” and “Madeleine’s Inquisition.” Both books have the theme that the religious subordination of one sex to the other is wrong. Admission is free. The Franco Center is at 46 Cedar St.\, Lewiston. Call 207-689-2000 for more information.  \nLewiston author Paul Dionne to speak about his books’ topic: religious subordination   \nLEWISTON—The Franco Center will host Lewiston author Paul Dionne at noon Wednesday\, Oct. 4\, in its Books and Stories. Admission to this author’s talk is free.   \nDionne\, author of “The Priestess and the Pope” and new “Madeleine’s Inquisition” will discuss the basic theme of his books which is that the religious subordination of one sex to the other is wrong. About “Madeleine’s Inquisition\,” Dionne writes\, “Madeleine Moreau\, poverty stricken and alone\, struggles to provide for herself and her children\, her future bleak\, foreboding and empty. She draws strength in her darkest hour when the Monsignor of Paris charges her with witchcraft and threatens to tear her family apart.”  \n“The Priestess and the Pope” is “a gripping story around the history of women leaders in the early church and the scandal of their subordination in the rise of Christianity. Across eras\, readers learn the fate of rebellious churches and women priests as they move through the life and death of Jesus\, the fall of the Roman Empire\, and the systematic purging of history by the Vatican\,” according to Dionne.  \nDionne was born in Lewiston\, Maine\, and graduated from Lewiston High School and Kents Hill Preparatory School where he played hockey and baseball. He then graduated from Providence College where he received his bachelor’s degree in history followed by a commission as a Lieutenant in the United States Army (1966-1968).  He saw action in Vietnam. After his discharge\, he returned to Maine and attended the University of Maine Law School where he received a Juris Doctorate degree.  He practiced law in Maine and was elected as Mayor of Lewiston (1980-1984).    \nIt is suggested that participants buy the featured books ahead of the book talk at Amazon or other online book stores.  \nThe Franco Center is at 46 Cedar St.\, Lewiston. Parking is available in the mill lot. The building is handicap accessible on the Lincoln St. Alley side.  \nThe Books and Stories program features an author who will read from his/her book\, have books available for purchase and signing\, and follow up with questions and answers following the presentation. The Books & Stories program at the Franco Center has been funded in part by the Maine Humanities Council and Maine Arts Commission.

He began his musical career in September 1957 at age 6\, formally studying piano under the late\, renowned Maine music teacher Louis Sirois for 11 years. Mailhot played his first formal public performance in a piano recital in May 1960.   \nMailhot began playing drums in 1964\, inspired by his father and the British invasion beginning with The Beatles. He continues playing\, performing\, and teaching both instruments today. In 1967\, Mailhot was chosen to represent Westbrook High School as a tenor in the All-State Concert and in 1968 sang “Edelweiss” from “The Sound of Music” as a solo with the Westbrook High School Chorus in the All-City Concert.    \nDuring his musical career\, Mailhot has performed thousands of gigs with pioneering Maine bands Love\, Inc. and Pegasus in the 1960s and ’70s. He performed with The Chapparals and currently performs with Get Back\, a Beatles ‘60s tribute band\, and as a solo pianist and singer. Mailhot has also written\, recorded\, toured extensively\, and produced music releases.    \nAs a member of Love\, Inc. in 1968\, Mailhot opened for well-known Boston groups The Orphans and Ultimate Spinach. When performing with Pegasus in the 1970s\, he opened for national artists Bob Seger and Edgar Winter. Love\, Inc. was the first Maine pop band to record an album in 1970 and chart three singles in 1969\, 1970\, and 1971.    \nPegasus recorded their only single at Record Plant East in New York City\, in the same Studio where Don McLean recorded “American Pie.” The band’s producer was Dan Turbeville who co-produced the first Woodstock album\, and engineer Dennis Ferrante who engineered George Harrison’s “Concert for Bangladesh” album.    \nMailhot taught keyboard and drums at Starbird Music in Portland\, Maine in the 1960s and early ’70s.    \nLong-time patrons of the Franco Center may recall that from 2015 to 2017\, Mailhot was part of the “Connie Combo” for the Connie Francis Tribute Show.   \nTickets are $17 and include the meal and entertainment. All seats are reserved. Tickets must be purchased by noon Tuesday\, Sept. 5\, so we can plan the number of meals to prepare. Tickets will not be sold at the door.   \nCall the box office at 207-689-2000 or visit between 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Purchase online at www.francocenter.org/shows.   \nThe Noon Tunes La Rencontre series is sponsored by FACE Foundation\, TV5 Monde\, and the Quebec Delegation Boston.  \n“French programs at the Franco Center are supported by TV5Monde\, FACE Foundation\, and the Quebec Delegation Boston\,” said Scammon. “In addition to the Noon Tunes La Rencontre Series\, they sponsor our free Parlez-Vous? French conversation meetup every other Thursday morning.”   \nThe Franco Center offers tours of the former St. Mary’s Church with stories and exhibits about the French Canadian immigrants; miscellaneous French entertainment throughout the performance year; a French library with diverse resources including oral histories; and a Franco Trail L-A map which highlights significant Franco American locations in Lewiston and Auburn.   \nThe Franco Center is at 46 Cedar St.\, Lewiston. Parking is in the Oxford Street mill lot.
