SUMMARY:Runnin’ Down a Dream Tom Petty tribute band returning Oct. 7 to Franco Center
DESCRIPTION:LEWISTON– The Franco Center has announced that Runnin’ Down a Dream: The Tom Petty Tribute Band will return to its stage at 7 p.m. Saturday\, Oct. 7\, 2023. For over 40 years\, Tom Petty created timeless classics with the Heartbreakers\, Mudcrutch\, The Traveling Wilburys\, and released solo albums until his unfortunate death in 2017. “Our show faithfully replicates the style and feel of a Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers concert\, allowing the audience to experience the music of this extraordinary artist\,” said Roger Howard\, tribute band spokesperson.  \nThis Maine-based band includes members Mike Boucher on lead vocals and guitar; Harry Coddington on lead guitar; Roger Howard on drums; Marty Mclellan on guitar and vocals; and Steve Brown on keyboard and vocals. When five veteran musicians from Maine\, with local and national experience\, play Petty’s music together\, the feeling\, meaning\, and very soul of these songs are undeniable.   \nRoger said\, “Our first performance last year at the  Franco center in Lewiston was magical. Playing  to the enthusiastic audience at the beautifully restored former church made it a really special night for us. We’ll be back for our encore performance on October 7th with some new songs and a whole assortment of Tom Petty’s classics!” Roger started taking drum lessons at age 12 and joined his first garage band at 16. From there he went on to play in an assortment of bands in five states. His wide variety of musical styles include blues\, country\, alternative\, rock\, and rhythm and blues. Playing in Runnin’ Down A Dream is the culmination of everything Roger has learned and experienced over many decades in his extensive musical career.       \nMike Boucher started playing Tom Petty songs in his high school cover band. During the 1990s\, Boucher began to focus his talents on song writing and has continued to sing and play his music for audiences on the East and West coasts.   \nIn 2007\, Boucher called on Harry Coddington to lend his versatile guitar-playing talents to the alt-country band The Gaffers. Coddington started playing guitar shortly after seeing The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964 when he was six years old. He’s played in many different bands in Florida and now in Maine. He has an affinity for Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers\, which made dreaming up this band just feel natural.   \nMarty Mclellan made his debut at a coffee house performing covers of Neil Young\, Grateful Dead\, Jim Croce and James Taylor at Hobart College in Geneva\, New York in 1982. Dirty McCurdy marked Mclellan’s first real experience as a frontman. The band covered mostly rock and roll\, but also some original material while it continued to adhere to the blues standards it had established in the Blues Barn years.   \nSteve Brown’s music career began in the late 1970s when he joined the band White Water in Central Maine playing a beat-up old Wurlitzer electric piano. This led to a brief Holiday Inn tour with an Elvis Presley tribute show. Brown became an in-demand keyboard player in the New England region. He was a member of some well-known bands including Ricky and the Giants\, Elmore Twist Band\, Gary Black and the Blues\, 43 North and the LA Harley Band.   \nThese five musicians together on the Franco Center stage will perform the music of Tom Petty with authentic renditions from every stage of Petty’s career. Doors and a cash bar open an hour before showtime.   \nDoors and cash bar open at 6 p.m. Concert starts at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at www.francocenter.org/shows or by phone at 207-689-2000. Tickets can also be purchased in person at our box office between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.    \nTier 1 tickets in advance are $30 and at the door: $35.  \nTier 2 tickets in advance are $25 and at the door: $30.  \nWatch Runnin’ Down a Dream Tom Petty  Tribute Band’s music videos on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/@RunninDownADreamTPettyTribute/videos  \nThe Franco Center is at 46 Cedar St.\, Lewiston. Parking is available in the mill lot. The building is handicap accessible on the Lincoln St. Alley side.  \n

SUMMARY:Author Paul Dionne to speak about his books' topic: Religious subordination Oct. 4
DESCRIPTION:PHOTO CAPTION: At noon Wednesday\, Oct. 4\, local author Paul Dionne will discuss his books “The Priestess and the Pope” and “Madeleine’s Inquisition.” Both books have the theme that the religious subordination of one sex to the other is wrong. Admission is free. The Franco Center is at 46 Cedar St.\, Lewiston. Call 207-689-2000 for more information.  \nLewiston author Paul Dionne to speak about his books’ topic: religious subordination   \nLEWISTON—The Franco Center will host Lewiston author Paul Dionne at noon Wednesday\, Oct. 4\, in its Books and Stories. Admission to this author’s talk is free.   \nDionne\, author of “The Priestess and the Pope” and new “Madeleine’s Inquisition” will discuss the basic theme of his books which is that the religious subordination of one sex to the other is wrong. About “Madeleine’s Inquisition\,” Dionne writes\, “Madeleine Moreau\, poverty stricken and alone\, struggles to provide for herself and her children\, her future bleak\, foreboding and empty. She draws strength in her darkest hour when the Monsignor of Paris charges her with witchcraft and threatens to tear her family apart.”  \n“The Priestess and the Pope” is “a gripping story around the history of women leaders in the early church and the scandal of their subordination in the rise of Christianity. Across eras\, readers learn the fate of rebellious churches and women priests as they move through the life and death of Jesus\, the fall of the Roman Empire\, and the systematic purging of history by the Vatican\,” according to Dionne.  \nDionne was born in Lewiston\, Maine\, and graduated from Lewiston High School and Kents Hill Preparatory School where he played hockey and baseball. He then graduated from Providence College where he received his bachelor’s degree in history followed by a commission as a Lieutenant in the United States Army (1966-1968).  He saw action in Vietnam. After his discharge\, he returned to Maine and attended the University of Maine Law School where he received a Juris Doctorate degree.  He practiced law in Maine and was elected as Mayor of Lewiston (1980-1984).    \nIt is suggested that participants buy the featured books ahead of the book talk at Amazon or other online book stores.  \nThe Franco Center is at 46 Cedar St.\, Lewiston. Parking is available in the mill lot. The building is handicap accessible on the Lincoln St. Alley side.  \nThe Books and Stories program features an author who will read from his/her book\, have books available for purchase and signing\, and follow up with questions and answers following the presentation. The Books & Stories program at the Franco Center has been funded in part by the Maine Humanities Council and Maine Arts Commission.

Davidson County Line is a three-piece band established in 2015 from Central Maine. They perform a mix of rockabilly\, blues\, rock\, and country music. All members have over 30 years of experience and the mix of music is a “crowd pleaser\,” according to Jake Hodgkin\, Franco Center production manager.  \nThe various musical hits they play are by Johnny Cash\, Elvis\, Jerry Lee Lewis\, Chuck Berry\, and many more from the 1950s and ‘60s. Davidson County Line performs on diverse stages including cruise lines\, casinos\, antique car shows\, and county fairs in Maine\, Massachusetts\, and New York.   \nMembers of Davidson County Line include Nashville recording artist on guitar and vocals “Eddie” Jones who began playing violin\, mandolin\, and banjo at age six in Nashville. He started performing at the Grand Ole Opry and Ryman Auditorium from an early age. Jones was one of Nashville’s youngest mandolin players. He soon began playing both guitar and bass\, and has been performing professionally for more than 40 years with a number of well-known artists.  He worked as a studio session player in Nashville and is considered a “Guitar Slinger.” Jones relocated to Maine in 2010. Handicap parking is near the elevator on the alley side of the building. \nSponsors are TV5Monde\, Quebec Delegation Boston\, and FACE Foundation. Thank you for your support! \nMore about Denny Breau: \nDenny Breau – A Musician’s Musician\nDenny Breau’s rhythmically flawless and dazzlingly clear style allows him to do amazing and stunning things with a six-string guitar. He first draws in an audience with a finely arranged melody and then slides effortlessly into scorching fingerwork that sets ears aflame. The lighting fast guitar lines that seem almost humanly impossible to accomplish are balanced with those that have a quiet intimacy and wrap tenderly around his carefully crafted songs. He mixes genres with ease — folk\, Delta blues\, country and jazz — “creating a totally accessible musical mélange that captivates as it entertains\,” according to Lucky Clark writing for the Kennebec (Maine) Journal. \nGuitarists in the audience often suspect that they have been left in the dust and regularly tell Denny that they might as well hang up their guitars! As Denny greets concert-goers and shakes hands following his performances\, guitar players invariably ask how he performs certain techniques and Denny\, who has a passion for teaching\, is happy to show them. This is especially true when demonstrating the guitar style of Chet Atkins\, who was a family friend and major influence. Shows usually include a “smartly executed Chet Atkins medley by Breau who truly does the late Atkins proud\,” according to a review in Dirty Linen magazine. \nIt is not an exaggeration to say that Denny was born to the instrument on May 26\, 1952. His parents\, Hal Lone Pine and Betty Cody\, were popular country performers and RCA recording artists beginning in the 1940s. His older brother\, the late Lenny Breau\, is considered a jazz guitar giant. A recent Dirty Linen review of Denny’s solo CD of “neighborly song portraits of weathered souls” said that “listening to Denny nimbly bend his acoustic steel strings…one can hear a jazz player’s elegant fluidity.” \nDenny started playing guitar when he was 9 years old and was performing professionally by his early teens. During more than 30 years as a full-time musician\, he has performed with many well-known artists and picked alongside outstanding guitarists including Bryan Sutton\, Harvey Reid\, J.P. Cormier\, Pat Donohue\, Dan Crary and Steve Kaufman. He has long been in demand as a studio musician and has done jingles and sound tracks for radio and television as well as recorded and produced albums for other artists. Denny was a member of roots music trio Turkey Hollow with Tom Rowe and Tom’s son Dave starting in 1998. Since Tom’s death in early 2004\, Denny and Dave have continued to perform as Turkey Hollow on a limited bases. Denny was inducted into the Maine Country Music Hall of Fame in 2004\, the youngest inductee in the history of the organization. \nIn addition to an active solo career\, Denny gives private guitar lessons and teaches music clinics. He also fronts the Denny Breau Trio. Both in solo and trio performances\, musical boundaries disappear as Denny takes his music to wherever the joy and spirit of the moment leads him. \nDenny is a triple threat: a consummate picker\, evocative songwriter\, and a singer with a ” voice that is warm and inviting but completely unpretentious— much like the singer himself\,” according to Lucky Clark. Mainers have long considered Denny a “must –see\,” but they are happy to share a favorite son with those “from away.” \nSponsors are TV5Monde\, Quebec Delegation Boston\, and FACE Foundation. Thank you for your support!

SUMMARY:Pihcintu Multinational Chorus to perform April 29 at Franco Center in free concert
DESCRIPTION:LEWISTON – The inspiring sounds of the renowned Pihcintu Multinational Chorus will be heard in the acoustically superb performance space at the Franco Center at 7 p.m. Saturday\, April 29. The event is free and open to the public\, but tickets are still required.   \nThis international choral group brings together refugee and immigrant children from around the world to share their music and stories of their homelands and the experience of being a refugee in Maine.  \n“Sharing music and stories is a common thread among immigrants and this includes the French Canadian immigrants and their Franco American descendants in Lewiston’s Little Canada\,” said Denise Scammon\, marketing director at the Franco Center. “Music and song was one tradition that kept the Franco American community together.” Local Franco Americans are known to have had many social clubs and church choirs in which they were united by their language and culture and children were expected to sing or play an instrument.   \nSince its inception in 2006\, the Pihcintu chorus has performed over 300\,000 live and hundreds of millions via broadcast and internet media including the Today Show\, National Public Radio\, Voice of America\, Al Jazeera\, Univision\, UN TV and You Tube. They have appeared at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts\, Washington DC; The National Cathedral\, Washington\, DC; and the United Nations\, New York\, New York; to name but a few of the venues. Over the course of time over 300 girls representing 40 countries have passed through the chorus with 100 percent high school graduation and 85 percent post-secondary education.  \nThe chorus was founded and is directed by Con Fullam\, award-winning producer\, musician\, songwriter\, and Maine native\, who combined his passion for music with a deep concern for the effect of world issues on children. Fullam is interested in giving Lewiston- and Auburn-area youth the opportunity to hear these stories and discover a human connection with the experiences of these young refugees.  \nWar-torn villages\, bloodshed\, refugee camps\, famine and political turmoil were devastating realities for many of these young singers before being embraced by the warmth\, companionship and harmony that Pihcintu provides.  \nThe power of survival eases but never erases the memory of unthinkable atrocities\, physical danger and personal tragedy. Portland\, Maine\, an ever-expanding international resettlement community\, was fertile ground to bring together children from diverse backgrounds to sing as one.  \nThis unique chorus of young women from Cambodia\, China\, Congo\, El Salvador\, Egypt\, Kazakhstan\, Kenya\, Lebanon\, Saudi Arabia\, Somalia\, Sudan\, Uganda\, Viet Nam\, British West Indies\, and Zambia\, along with children whose families have been here for generations\, have formed a powerful and permanent bond.  \nGET FREE TICKETS HERE \nCall the box office for free tickets at 207-689-2000 or order them online at www.francocenter.org/shows. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The Franco Center is at 46 Cedar Street\, Lewiston. Its building is the former St. Mary’s Church\, built in 1907 for French Canadian immigrants.   \n

SUMMARY:The Court Jesters on stage as part of Cabaret Series April 20
DESCRIPTION:The Court Jesters to play at the Franco Center’s Cabaret Night April 20  \nLEWISTON— \nThe Court Jesters will perform as part of the Franco Center’s Cabaret Night Series at 7 p.m. Thursday\, April 20. The band is made up of two voices\, one guitarist\, and one tambourine player: John Hasnip and Tina Charest. Hasnip plays guitar\, Charest plays tambourine\, and both sing.  \nThey perform all over the state of Maine and play a diverse array of original music and cover songs which have included\, “Squeeze Box” by The Who\, “Hotel California” by The Eagles\, “8 Days a Week” by The Beatles\, “Cecilia” by Simon & Garfunkel\, “Stray Cat Strut” by Stray Cats\, “Fat Bottomed Girls” by Queen\, and “X’s and O’s” by Elle King.   \nShortly after Hasnip moved from England to Maine\, he had an opportunity to host open mic nights on a weekly basis\, meeting new friends in a strange country.  It was in this circle that he met Charest\, a Franco-American girl born and raised in New England who “loved to sing more than anything.” Together\, with Hasnip’s passion-fueled guitar\, Charest’s strong tambourine and their shared love of vocal harmonies\, duo magic was created\, according to their press release.  \nHasnip’s musical influences are Elvis Costello\, The Beatles\, and Colin Hay; while Charest’s are Linda Ronstadt\, Anne Murray\, and Karen Carpenter.  Together\, Hasnip and Charest make up The Court Jesters\, bringing you a mix of genres from their diverse backgrounds\, and possibly a shenanigan or two.  Their gigs are never the same\, with energy and shared laughter filling the evening.  Cover tunes are blended with their own special style\, and their originals are as heartfelt and genuine as they are.  \nSupport for this concert comes from CMP/Avangrid\, Roopers\, Maple Way Dental Care\, Bennett Radio Group\, Sun Journal\, Turner Publishing\, and Uncle Andy’s Digest\, according to Franco Center staff.   \nDoors open an hour before the show.
