SUMMARY:Pihcintu Multinational Chorus to perform April 29 at Franco Center in free concert
DESCRIPTION:LEWISTON – The inspiring sounds of the renowned Pihcintu Multinational Chorus will be heard in the acoustically superb performance space at the Franco Center at 7 p.m. Saturday\, April 29. The event is free and open to the public\, but tickets are still required.   \nThis international choral group brings together refugee and immigrant children from around the world to share their music and stories of their homelands and the experience of being a refugee in Maine.  \n“Sharing music and stories is a common thread among immigrants and this includes the French Canadian immigrants and their Franco American descendants in Lewiston’s Little Canada\,” said Denise Scammon\, marketing director at the Franco Center. “Music and song was one tradition that kept the Franco American community together.” Local Franco Americans are known to have had many social clubs and church choirs in which they were united by their language and culture and children were expected to sing or play an instrument.   \nSince its inception in 2006\, the Pihcintu chorus has performed over 300\,000 live and hundreds of millions via broadcast and internet media including the Today Show\, National Public Radio\, Voice of America\, Al Jazeera\, Univision\, UN TV and You Tube. They have appeared at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts\, Washington DC; The National Cathedral\, Washington\, DC; and the United Nations\, New York\, New York; to name but a few of the venues. Over the course of time over 300 girls representing 40 countries have passed through the chorus with 100 percent high school graduation and 85 percent post-secondary education.  \nThe chorus was founded and is directed by Con Fullam\, award-winning producer\, musician\, songwriter\, and Maine native\, who combined his passion for music with a deep concern for the effect of world issues on children. Fullam is interested in giving Lewiston- and Auburn-area youth the opportunity to hear these stories and discover a human connection with the experiences of these young refugees.  \nWar-torn villages\, bloodshed\, refugee camps\, famine and political turmoil were devastating realities for many of these young singers before being embraced by the warmth\, companionship and harmony that Pihcintu provides.  \nThe power of survival eases but never erases the memory of unthinkable atrocities\, physical danger and personal tragedy. Portland\, Maine\, an ever-expanding international resettlement community\, was fertile ground to bring together children from diverse backgrounds to sing as one.  \nThis unique chorus of young women from Cambodia\, China\, Congo\, El Salvador\, Egypt\, Kazakhstan\, Kenya\, Lebanon\, Saudi Arabia\, Somalia\, Sudan\, Uganda\, Viet Nam\, British West Indies\, and Zambia\, along with children whose families have been here for generations\, have formed a powerful and permanent bond.  \nGET FREE TICKETS HERE \nCall the box office for free tickets at 207-689-2000 or order them online at www.francocenter.org/shows. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The Franco Center is at 46 Cedar Street\, Lewiston. Its building is the former St. Mary’s Church\, built in 1907 for French Canadian immigrants.   \n

SUMMARY:The Court Jesters on stage as part of Cabaret Series April 20
DESCRIPTION:The Court Jesters to play at the Franco Center’s Cabaret Night April 20  \nLEWISTON— \nThe Court Jesters will perform as part of the Franco Center’s Cabaret Night Series at 7 p.m. Thursday\, April 20. The band is made up of two voices\, one guitarist\, and one tambourine player: John Hasnip and Tina Charest. Hasnip plays guitar\, Charest plays tambourine\, and both sing.  \nThey perform all over the state of Maine and play a diverse array of original music and cover songs which have included\, “Squeeze Box” by The Who\, “Hotel California” by The Eagles\, “8 Days a Week” by The Beatles\, “Cecilia” by Simon & Garfunkel\, “Stray Cat Strut” by Stray Cats\, “Fat Bottomed Girls” by Queen\, and “X’s and O’s” by Elle King.   \nShortly after Hasnip moved from England to Maine\, he had an opportunity to host open mic nights on a weekly basis\, meeting new friends in a strange country.  It was in this circle that he met Charest\, a Franco-American girl born and raised in New England who “loved to sing more than anything.” Together\, with Hasnip’s passion-fueled guitar\, Charest’s strong tambourine and their shared love of vocal harmonies\, duo magic was created\, according to their press release.  \nHasnip’s musical influences are Elvis Costello\, The Beatles\, and Colin Hay; while Charest’s are Linda Ronstadt\, Anne Murray\, and Karen Carpenter.  Together\, Hasnip and Charest make up The Court Jesters\, bringing you a mix of genres from their diverse backgrounds\, and possibly a shenanigan or two.  Their gigs are never the same\, with energy and shared laughter filling the evening.  Cover tunes are blended with their own special style\, and their originals are as heartfelt and genuine as they are.  \nSupport for this concert comes from CMP/Avangrid\, Roopers\, Maple Way Dental Care\, Bennett Radio Group\, Sun Journal\, Turner Publishing\, and Uncle Andy’s Digest\, according to Franco Center staff.   \nDoors open an hour before the show. SUMMARY:Beatles tribute band to play early songs March 31\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:Studio Two—The Early Beatles Tribute band to play March 31 in Riverfront Series  \nLEWISTON—Studio Two will bring their early Beatles tribute music to the Franco Center stage Friday\, March 31\, as part of its Riverfront Performance & Event Series. Band members include Stephen Murray who portrays John Lennon\, Joshua Jones as Paul McCartney\, Robert Murray as George Harrison\, and Dylan Verge as Ringo Starr.  \nBand members are experienced musicians of today’s generation dedicated to preserving the memory and fan culture of The Beatles generation. By recreating the Fab Four’s music\, appearance\, instruments\, and onstage banter\, Studio Two performs favorite Beatles hits that will bring people to the dance floor.    \nAt age 11\, Steve Murray found an old guitar in the basement and has been playing ever since. A fan of many music genres\, he became a Beatles fan after watching The Beatles Anthology documentary series in November 1995.   \nHis grandfather bought him and his identical twin brother (who plays George Harrison in Studio Two) their first guitars: a Rickenbacker and Hofner bass and got them private guitar lessons. By the age of 12\, the brothers were winning talent shows and band competitions for playing Beatles tunes.    \nThroughout high school\, Steve played drums in an award-winning percussion ensemble and marching band\, but never strayed far from his true passion of Beatles rock. An accomplished musician\, Steve attended Berklee College of Music and played jazz and alternative rock music before co-creating Studio Two – The Beatles Tribute with his band mates.   \nIn addition to playing John Lennon\, Steve is a live sound engineer and currently serves as the band’s booking agent.   \n“As a trained musician\, I never expected to be playing in a Beatles tribute band\, but it has been an amazing experience. I am humbled to have an opportunity to portray John Lennon\, who is one of the most talented musicians and composers of all time\, and I am thrilled to bring Beatles music to a multitude of different generations. Best of all\, I get to do this with my brother and best friends\,” said Steve.   \nRob Murray picked up his first guitar at age 11 and has never been without one since.  Like his twin brother Steve\, Rob was turned on to The Beatles by watching The Beatles Anthology documentary series in 1995. He is a Beatles trivia master and is particularly knowledgeable about the equipment The Beatles used – especially vintage microphones.   \nAs a young musician\, Rob played drums in an award-winning percussion ensemble and marching band\, and continued to play guitar\, often winning talent shows and band competitions for playing Beatles tunes.   \nA graduate of Berklee College of Music\, Rob is a trained guitarist with strong audio engineering skills. For example\, he has been involved in helping Beatles documentary filmmakers to sync Beatles audio to rare concert footage.   \nWhen he co-founded Studio Two in 2012\, all of Rob’s talents were put to use. In addition to playing George Harrison\, Rob is the equipment guru\, hunting flea markets\, estate sales\, and eBay to assemble the authentic gear the Beatles used in the early 1960s.   \n“Playing George Harrison and re-enacting Beatles’ performances from the early years has been a thrill. I love the vintage equipment and raw sound of the Beatles’ Hamburg era\, and we take special care to ensure the look and sound is as close to authentic as possible\,” said Rob. “Studio Two has been an amazing journey\, and every day I look forward to meeting both old fans of The Beatles and new fans of Studio Two!”   \nDylan Verge is a Boston native entering his senior year at Berklee College of Music. He was awarded the J. Curtis Warner City Music Full Scholarship to the institution where he is pursuing his studies in the CWP major (Contemporary Writing and Production). Verge has been Influenced by Beatles music since he witnessed footage of the four lads rocking the nation on the Ed Sullivan Show in February 1964 when he was four years old.   \nJoshua Jones is flying in from Seattle\, Washington to perform with Studio Two. Jones will portray Paul McCartney. He is a self-taught left-handed bass player. Jones tours with Beatles tribute bands all over the world.   \nDoors and cash bar open at 6 p.m. Concert starts at 7 p.m. with dancing all night. Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door day of the show and can be purchased online at www.francocenter.org\, by phone at 207-689-2000 or in person at our box office between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Franco Center is at 46 Cedar St.\, in Lewiston’s Riverfront Island neighborhood. Parking is available in the mill lot. The building is handicap accessible on the Lincoln St. Alley side.    \nClick here to view tickets on sale.\n\nThank you Central Maine Healthcare for sponsoring this event! \n \n

The setting for this book signing and author talk is in the former St. Mary’s Church\, built for the French Canadian immigrants who lived along the river and worked in the mills.\n\n\n\nBook Signing and Author Talk\n“The Toll Road North” by Peggy L. DeBlois has been getting great reviews! Come find out why! The story is especially meaningful for people with a connection to Lewiston and/or Franco Canadian heritage. The story follows Dee who brings her son to her hometown of Lewiston to visit Bates College. The pair are held hostage at Luiggi’s. Dee recognizes the gunman\, and then the novel goes back in time to show how Dee’s and the gunman’s families were connected\, primarily set in the 1960 to ’70s Lewiston. Dee eventually works through her trauma\, past and present\, and rediscovers all the good things about her childhood in Lewiston.\n\n\n\nAbout the author: Peggy Lafreniere DeBlois grew up in Lewiston\, Maine and is a proud graduate of Bowdoin College. She enjoyed careers in marketing\, journalism\, and teaching prior to devoting her time to writing. “The Toll Road North” is her first novel. She continues to be inspired by the gritty beauty in her hometown.

Mailhot played his first formal public performance in a piano recital in May 1960. \nMailhot began playing drums in 1964\, inspired by his father and the British invasion beginning with The Beatles. He continues playing\, performing\, and teaching on both instruments today. He performed with The Chapparals and currently performs with Get Back\, a Beatles/ 60s tribute band\, and as a solo pianist and singer. Mailhot has also written\, recorded\, toured extensively\, and produced. \nAs a member of Love\, Inc. in 1968\, Mailhot opened for well-known Boston groups The Orphans and Ultimate Spinach. When performing with Pegasus in the 1970s\, he opened for national artists Bob Seger and Edgar Winter. Love\, Inc. was the first Maine pop band to record an album in 1970 and chart three singles in 1969\, 1970\, and 1971. \nPegasus recorded their only single at Record Plant East in New York City\, in the same Studio where Don McLean recorded “American Pie.” The band’s producer was Dan Turbeville who co-produced the first Woodstock album\, and engineer Dennis Ferrante who engineered George Harrison’s “Concert for Banglasdesh” album. \nMailhot taught keyboard and drums at Starbird Music in Portland\, Maine in the 1960s and early ’70s. \nPatrons of the Riverfront/Franco Center may recall that from 2015 to 2017\, Mailhot was part of the “Connie Combo” for the Connie Francis Tribute Show. \nFor tickets\, call or visit the Riverfront – Franco Center box office at 207-689-2000 Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The price of tickets is $15.
