SUMMARY:Tom Petty tribute band to play at Franco on Nov. 19
DESCRIPTION:The Franco Center has announced that Runnin’ Down a Dream: The Tom Petty Tribute Band will perform on its stage at 7 p.m. Saturday\, Nov. 19\, 2022.    \nThis Maine-based band includes members Mike Boucher on lead vocals and guitar; Harry Coddington on lead guitar; Roger Howard on drums; Marty Mclellan on guitar and vocals; and Steve Brown on keyboard and vocals. For over 40 years\, Tom Petty created timeless classics with the Heartbreakers\, Mudcrutch\, The Traveling Wilburys\, and released solo albums until his unfortunate death in 2017.   \nWhen five veteran musicians from Maine\, with local and national experience\, play Tom’s music together\, the feeling\, meaning\, and very soul of these songs are undeniable. Runnin’ Down A Dream was created to perform the music of Tom Petty with authentic renditions from every stage of his career. “Our show faithfully replicates the style and feel of a Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers concert\, allowing the audience to experience the music of this extraordinary artist\,” said Roger Howard.  \nMike Boucher started playing Tom Petty songs in his high school cover band. During the 1990s\, Boucher began to focus his talents on song writing and has continued to sing and play his music for audiences on the East and West coasts.   \nIn 2007\, Boucher called on Harry Coddington to lend his versatile guitar-playing talents to the alt-country band The Gaffers. Most recently\, Boucher has been performing around the Portland area with his roots rock band Jeezum Crow. Boucher is also the owner of Sonic Pictures\, a video production company based in Portland\, Maine.   \nCoddington started playing guitar shortly after seeing The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964 when he was six years old. Initially\, he was impressed by the bands of the 1960s and ‘70s such as Rolling Stones\, Creedence Clearwater Revival\, Cream\, The Hollies\, The Zombies\, The Eagles\, Jimi Hendrix\, Derek & The Dominos\, Allman Brothers. He also loved country and instrumental bands such as Johnny Cash\, The Ventures\, Willy Nelson\, The Hellecasters\,  Brad Paisley\, Ricky Skaggs\, Vince Gill\, The New Nashville Cats\, and Johnny Hiland.   \nCoddington won the Downeast Country Music Association’s first place “New Country Instrumentalist” for the year 2000. He’s played in many different bands starting in Florida and now in Maine. He has an affinity for Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers\, which made dreaming up this band just feel natural.   \nRoger Howard started taking drum lessons at age 12 and joined his first garage band at 16. From there he went on to play in an assortment of bands in five states. His wide variety of musical styles include blues\, country\, alternative\, rock\, and rhythm and blues.     \nSince settling in Maine in the 1980s\, Howard has always been part of the Maine music scene. His stage experiences have taken him from local bars and clubs to private functions\, town fairs\, campgrounds\, festivals\, tour boats\, and just about anywhere he can set up a drum set. From early on\, Howard had his mind on the business aspect of the bands\, always willing to go out and meet club owners\, managers\, and booking agents.    \nPlaying in Runnin’ Down A Dream is the culmination of everything Howard has learned and experienced over many decades in his extensive musical career.       \nMarty Mclellan made his debut at a coffee house performing covers of Neil Young\, Grateful Dead\, Jim Croce and James Taylor at Hobart College in Geneva\, New York in 1982. Following that gig\, he was fortunate to hook up with a local musicians club and formed his first band\, Xtra Stok.   \nIn 1995\, Mclellan began to jam with local musician Ken Goodman in what would eventually become Blues Barn. The band acquired a new drummer and a new name. Dirty McCurdy marked Mclellan’s first real experience as a frontman. The band covered mostly rock and roll\, but also some original material while it continued to adhere to the blues standards it had established in the Blues Barn years.   \nSteve Brown’s music career began in the late 1970s when he joined the band White Water in Central Maine playing a beat-up old Wurlitzer electric piano. This led to a brief Holiday Inn tour with an Elvis Presley tribute show.    \nOver the years\, Brown became an in-demand keyboard player in the New England region. He was a member of some well-known bands including Ricky and the Giants\, Elmore Twist Band\, Gary Black and the Blues\, 43 North and the LA Harley Band. He has been a first-call keyboard fill-in for dozens more bands.    \nThese five musicians together on the Franco stage will perform the music of Tom Petty with authentic renditions from every stage of his career. Doors open an hour before showtime. A full cash bar will be available.   \nSupport for this concert comes from Androscoggin Bank\, Maple Way Dental Care\, Bennett Radio Group\, Sun Journal\, Turner Publishing\, and Uncle Andy’s Digest\, according to Franco Center staff.  \nDoors open an hour before the show. Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door day of show and can be purchased online at www.francocenter.org or by phone at 207-689-2000. Tickets can also be purchased in person at our box office between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.   \nThe Franco Center is at 46 Cedar St.\, Lewiston. Parking is available in the mill lot. The building is handicap accessible on the Lincoln St. Alley side.

SUMMARY:Family-friendly magic and illusion show coming to our stage Nov. 12
DESCRIPTION:Magic and illusion show coming to Franco Center stage Nov. 12  \nLEWISTON–Markus and Angelique Steelgrave will present their family-friendly show of magic and illusion at 2 p.m. Saturday\, Nov. 12\, at the Franco Center. Their show is sure to amaze guests with baffling magic and illusion\, juggling\, upbeat music\, clean comedy\, and plenty of good-natured audience participation. Angelique wrote about the Franco Center\, “Wow\, it’s beautiful! Perfect staging for a very magical illusion show.”  \nMarkus Steelgrave was inspired to be a magician as a child\, after reading a book about Harry Houdini and finding instructions in the back of the book on how to do a magic trick. At age 13\, he literally ran away with the circus\, and later joined the U.S. Navy after high school. After his time on the high seas\, Markus worked as a magician\, a juggler\, and a fire-eater. He has been a consultant for theater companies and TV commercials\, and he is also a skilled balloon-twisting artist.  \nAngelique Steelgrave earned a bachelor’s degree in theater at the University of Southern Maine and co-founded and performed with her own children’s theater\, Krackerjack Theatre Company\, from 1988-2002. She saw her first magic show as an adult when encouraged to do so by a theater director who was also a magician and needed a new assistant. Angelique was selected for the role\, and magic has been part of her life ever since.  \nMarkus and Angelique Steelgrave partnered in 2002 and were married in 2006. Magic continues to be their full-time profession\, and The Steelgraves\, as they are known professionally\, give hundreds of performances each year\, mainly out of state. They have won several awards for both stage and close-up magic\, and have been headliners at magic conventions around the U.S. Local television appearances include “The Nite Show with Danny Cashman” and Fox 23’s “Good Day Maine.”  \nThe Steelgraves live in East Waterboro with their large family of critters including doves\, rabbits\, cats and the occasional flying squirrel.  \nTickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children in advance. Tickets at the door day of show are $20 for adults and $15 for children. Tickets can be purchased online at francocenter.org\, by phone at 207-689-2000\, or at the door day of show if tickets are still available. SUMMARY:Franco Center’s Piano Series to open Nov. 4 with Matthew Graybil
DESCRIPTION:LEWISTON—Concert pianist Matthew Graybil will open the Franco Center’s Piano Series season at 7 p.m. Friday\, Nov. 4. One of the most popular pianists to have performed at the Franco Center\, Graybil will begin the program with his arrangement of Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite. Beethoven’s Sonata No. 14\, Opus 27 (“Moonlight”) will complete the first half of the recital. Following intermission\, he will feature works by Bellini and Chopin\, and end the scheduled program with Bellini’s arrangement of Liszt’s “Reminiscences of Norma.”  \nGraybil stands out among the new generation of American classical pianists. He was praised by The New Yorker as “an exceptional artist” and by the Southampton Press for playing described as “hypnotic and compelling.” Following the release of his debut album\, in 2012\, featuring works by Brahms and Schubert\, Fanfare Magazine called him “one of the most sensitive\, poetic young pianists to debut on record in recent memory.”    \nIn September 2015\, Graybil and Igor Lovchinsky\, a close friend since their time at Juilliard\, opened the Franco Center’s 10th Piano Series Season with the New England premiere of the Piston work\, for which they had collaborated in the New York premiere the previous year.  \nA record of Chopin’s Complete Etudes\, Op. 10 was released by the Chopin Project in 2016\, and his recording\, with Larry Weng\, of the Piston Concerto for two pianos soli was released in February 2018 for Steinway & Sons records. He returned to Steinway’s recording studio in August\, 2018\, to record selections from his Debussy centennial celebration program. In March 2020\, he released his most recent album with violinist Niv Ashkenazi\, entitled “Violins of Hope” for Albany Records.  \nA native of Lancaster\, Pennsylvania\, Graybil began his piano studies at age 6 and gave his first recital within a year.  His teacher was Harvey Wedeen. He made his orchestral debut\, at age 14\, with a performance of the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1.   \nHe received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Juilliard School under the tutelage of Jerome Lowenthal and Matti Raekallio. He has given masterclasses at music schools and universities internationally and served as a faculty member of the Lancaster International Piano Festival. He resides in New York City.  \nA prizewinner in national and international competitions\, Graybil has given solo recitals and performed with orchestras and in chamber groups in the United States\, Canada\, Mexico\, the Netherlands\, and France.    \nA special thanks goes to the Piano Series season sponsor Ann’s Flower Shop.  \nTickets are $20. No charge for students. Tickets can be purchased online at www.francocenter.org or by phone at 207-689-2000. Tickets can also be purchased in person at our box office between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.     \nThe Franco Center is at 46 Cedar St. in Lewiston. Parking is in the mill lot. SUMMARY:International comedy 'The Male Intellect: An Oxymoron?' Oct. 6
DESCRIPTION:International comedy ‘The Male Intellect: An Oxymoron?’ coming to Franco stage Oct. 6  \nLEWISTON–Robert Dubac’s The Male Intellect: An Oxymoron? is an international comedy described by The New York Times as\, “Hilarious… a one man tours de force!” and it’s coming to the Franco Center at 7 p.m. Thursday\, Oct. 6.  \nOn a quest to answer the age-old question\, “What do women want?” Dubac transforms himself into five “hysterical boneheads who each offer sidesplitting advice on how to best straddle the gender gap – all while drinking a beer\,” according to Dubac’s press release.   \nCritics and audiences alike state “The Male Intellect: An Oxymoron? is a rare thing: a clever combination of theater and stand-up comedy that is laugh-out-loud funny\, provocative and insightful all at once. There are two types of people who should rush and see it – men and women!” according to The Providence Journal.     \nThe show opens with the character Bobby in a very confused state after having been dumped by the girl of his dreams. Unable to understand why\, he channels some not-so-wise\, but hilarious advice from his five chauvinistic mentors. With a shrug of his shoulders or a crook of his neck\, Dubac’s five alter egos each offer their own brand of misguided advice. They are:   \nTHE COLONEL who insists that the key to what women want is honesty\, hence all men should admit they’re boneheads so they always have an out.   \nJEAN-MICHEL who says communication is what women want and communicating with double-talk and mindless metaphors is completely acceptable as long as you speak with a sexy accent.   \nFAST EDDIE who gives women want they want – passion! But he doles it out from the passing lane professing men have to “love ’em fast and leave ’em first.”    \nOLD MR. LINGER who believes women want a sense of humor. He understands women can play hard to get. He also understands that if a man plays hard to get – he doesn’t get anything.  Old Mr. Linger is 123 years old and believes he has discovered the secret to life: remaining single.   \nRONNIE CABREZZI who believes all women want is some sensitivity. He also thinks sharing your secrets makes you sensitive.  However\, the kind of secrets he shares with his fiancé\, Lucy\, just piss her off.    \nLuckily\, BOBBY realizes their suggestions are worthless and with help from his “feminine side” he is able to sift through all the bad advice and discover the real answer to what women want. He does it all while drinking a beer.    \nBrace yourself\, ladies\, ‘cause this is how men think.   \nHaving been translated into dozens of languages from Hebrew to Hungarian and produced world-wide from the Eiffel Tower to the Heartland\, THE MALE INTELLECT is the kind of universal show that speaks to anyone who has ever been in a relationship. And out of one. And back in one again.    \nDubac creates characters that boggle our minds with biting wit and rapid-fire satire while simultaneously crafting a simple story that binds us all together. His ability to combine the raucous laughter of stand-up comedy with the startling thrill of live theater continues to fill seats everywhere.  \nTickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door day of show. Doors open one hour before show time. The Franco Center is at 46 Cedar St.\, Lewiston. Parking is available in the mill lot. Handicap access is on the Lincoln St. Alley side of the building.  \nTICKETS AVAILABLE HERE \n Thank you to our supporters! \nSeason Underwriter: Maple Way Dental Care \nMedia Sponsors: \nBennett Radio Group \nSun Journal \nTurner Publishing \nUncle Andy’s Digest \nEvent Sponsor: \nThe Champoux Insurance Group
