Another reason the Franco Center is important to our community: There is a need to continue redevelopment of Lewiston-Auburn’s mills and historic structures in order to keep the local economy growing. The two cities border opposite sides of the Androscoggin River. Sections of Lewiston, including Little Canada, are part of a federal Enterprise Community with a poverty rate of 42 percent. The Franco Center is located in the heart of Little Canada in the former St. Mary’s Catholic Church, an impressive, Late Gothic Revival structure. Its restoration is a necessary step in creating new economic and cultural activity in Little Canada and the Enterprise Community. What is more, a survey commissioned by a non-profit group, LA Excels, called for the creation of a 300-to-500 seat hall in the area. Ta da! That’s the Franco Center!
