From “The Valley Breeze” news article explaining the creation of a Franco route: The Franco Route of New England would connect Woonsocket and Manchester, N.H., Biddeford, Maine, and Lewiston, Maine, in an effort to celebrate the Québécois roots of these communities and share resources and information for residents and visitors to enjoy. According to Museum of Work and Culture Director Anne Conway, the route also has the potential to draw visitors from the north as Quebec natives rediscover their history of migration to New England. Franco Trail L-A: Sites Along the Way 

Celebrating French Heritage

St. Mary’s Church: This former church was built in 1907 to serve the Canadian French community of Little Canada along the riverfront. The building is now a performing arts and events center open to all. 

Originalement l’Église Ste-Marie desservant la communauté canadienne française catholique de Petit Canada, cet établissement est désormais le centre Franco accueillant des performances artistiques. 

 

Petit Canada / Little Canada: Built between 1866 and 1916 to accommodate the influx of French Canadian immigrants, this neighborhood was home to large families and tenements. 

Construit entre 1866 et 1916, afin d’accommoder l’afflux d’immigrants Canadiens français, ce quartier regorgeait de famille nombreuse ayant toujours le cœur a la fête. 

 

F.X. Marcotte: Francois X. Marcotte established his store in 1889 and prospered by serving new immigrants. 

Établi en 1889, Francois X. Marcotte prospéra en offrant ses services aux nouveaux immigrants. 

 

Railroad Station: The Grand Trunk Railroad linked downtown Lewiston with the Canadian national railway line between Portland and Montreal, which facilitated immigration to this area after 1874. Built in 1885, this station was considered the “Ellis Island” of the city.

Simard-Payne Park: Simard-Payne Park honors two Lewiston police officers killed in the line of duty. Many festivals take place in this park including the Great Falls Hot Air Balloon Festival each August.

Pont-Piéton / Footbridge: A symbol of collaboration between Lewiston and Auburn, a paved path follows the perimeter of the adjacent park, crossing the pedestrian bridge.

New Auburn: The Barker Mill was a catalyst for the residential development of what became known as “New Auburn.” Its proximity to Lewiston, specifically Little Canada, prompted the building of the “South Bridge” (renamed Lown Peace Bridge) which offered additional employment opportunities and connections to a growing Franco American community.

Wall Art, Main St., New Auburn: The Art Wall was established to beautify the retaining wall on Main Street through a display of art.

A.A. Garcelon House: Built in 1890, this was the house of Mr. Arthur A. Garcelon, a French Canadian merchant who operated as a grocery supplier. 

Construit en 1890, cette maison fut la propriete de M. Arthur A. Garcelon, un marchand d’origine canadienne-française qui dirigeait un fournisseur d’epicerie. 

 

Maine Franco American Genealogical Society: Maine Franco-American Genealogical Society is primarily a self-help genealogical research library. 

La Société de Généalogie Franco-Américaine du Maine est avant tout une bibliothèque de recherche généalogique autonome. 

 

Chutes / Great Falls: These water falls are the perfect link between industry and nature. Admire the strength of the water that has fueled the economy of our cities.

Bates Mill: French Canadians worked mostly in Lewiston’s mills producing cotton fabric and bedspreads. The Bates Mill opened in 1852 and flourished until 1920. 

Les Canadiens Français travaillaient principalement dans les usines de Lewiston produisant du tissu de coton et des couvre-lit. Le Moulin Ouvrit ses portes en 1852 et la production fleurit jusqu’en 1920. 

 

Canals: The canals, built mostly by Irish immigrants in 1845, increased Lewiston’s industrial potential as a textile city and provided the necessary energy to run the mills.

Hôtel de Ville: The “Wall of Mayors” on the first floor of Lewiston’s city hall includes Lewiston’s first Franco American mayor, Dr. Robert J. Wiseman, born in Quebec and married to a French Canadian, Rose Cyr.

Healy Asylum: Founded in 1892, the Healy Asylum was founded and operated by the Grey Nuns who conducted school in the orphanage.

Basilica: In 1872 the cornerstone of Saint Peter’s was laid, and the dedication mass was said in 1873. The upper structure was built between 1933 and 1936. Both the upper and lower church have been renovated. The history of the church is based on the amazing faith of French immigrants whose struggles, patience, and great generosity built it. 

La Basilique Saint-Pierre et St-Paul, fondée en 1870, est la plus ancienne paroisse catholique francophone de Portland. L’Histoire de la basilique Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul est celle de l’étonnante foi des immigrés canadiens-français dont la lutte, la patience et la grande générosité ont construit celle-ci. 

 

Franco-American Collection USM: The University of Southern Maine’s Franco-American Collection is one of the largest repositories of Franco American archival material in the state of Maine. 

La Collection Franco-Américaine de L’Université de Sud du Maine est l’un des plus grands dépôts d’archives Franco-Américaines dans l’état du Maine.
